Indian women’s team stun South Korea to reach semis

Ayhika Mukherjee starred as the Indian women’s team stunned South Korea 3-2 in the quarterfinals of Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

With the win, Indian women’s team also confirmed its first-ever medal at the Asin Table Tennis Championships and will now face Japan in the semifinals on Wednesday. The Japanese defeated Singapore 3-0 in the quarters.

Ayhika, ranked 92nd in the world, defeated World No. 8 Shin Yu-bin in the opening match before outplaying WR-16 Jeon Ji-hee in the deciding match to hand India the win. Manika Batra won the other match for India.

Manika and Ayhika’s wins in the opening two matches handed India a 2-0 lead in the quarter-final tie. Manika, world no. 29, defeated Jeon Ji-hee 12-14, 13-11, 11-5, 5-11, 12-10 to put India on the brisk of an unlikely victory after Ayhika had upset the eight-ranked Shin 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7) in the opening rubber.

However, Korea bounced back with two wins of their own to tie the quarter-final clash at 2-2 First Lee Eun-Hye blanked Sreeja Akula 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-8) before Shin returned to defeat Manika in a closely-fought match.

However, Ayhika continued her giant-killing spree, coming back from a game down to beat Jeon 3-1 and confirm a first-ever medal for India in the tournament.
