Each of these stars are among the best players at present.
As the New Year begins Grand Slam tournaments are back for tennis fans. As every year’s ritual, the first Grand Slam of the year will commence soon down under. The main draw of the 111th edition of the Australian Open will begin on January 16, 2023. After Christmas and New Year's break players have started to begin their preparation for the first major Grand Slam of the year.
Last year before the tournament a huge controversy broke out as nine-time Australian Open Champion Novak Djokovic was deported out of the country. Djokovic refused to submit his vaccine certificate and thus Australian Government and authorities decided to deport him.
With Roger Federer not taking part due to injury and Djokovic being deported back, Rafael Nadal made use of the opportunity to create a new World record. Nadal beat Daniil Medvedev in the final to lift his 21st Overall Grand Slam title. Now with Novak Djokovic back in the tournament and a few young names putting themselves among the top, it will not be easy for Nadal this time.
Djokovic has a dominating record at the Australian Open. Apart from these two tennis greats, there are other young names doing rounds as favourites to win the 2023 first major title. Here is a look at the top five players favourite to win Australian Open 2023 men's singles event.
5. Nick Kyrgios (Australia)
The 27-year-old Australian tennis star will resume his search for a maiden singles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open 2023. In recent years, Kyrgios has taken His game to a new level, but is yet to show it in titles. He did win the Australian Open men's doubles title, his first-ever major title, with fellow countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Kyrgios had a good 2022 and finished as runners-up in Wimbledon. He also had his best run at US Open reaching the quarter-finals. Nick’s recent performance has shown some confidence and he is among the favourites to win the first-ever singles Grand Slam title of his career.
4. Alexander Zverev (Germany)
The year 2022 was not so great for this young German player. Zverev has been a regular feature among the top players yet he has not managed to snatch any major title in his career. He managed to win the Junior singles major at the 2014 Australian Open. Zverev is a player who impresses everyone with his game.
He just needs a major title win under his name to justify the talent he has got. He will be looking forward to forgetting 2022 and starting fresh this year.
3. Daniil Medvedev (Russia)
If there is someone who has impressed everyone with his game, resilience and fighter attitude it’s Daniil Medvedev from Russia. Current Number 8 in ATP Rankings, Medvedev was a hot favourite to win the previous edition of the Australian Open. Even after giving a tough fight to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal in the final, he missed out on his maiden Australian Open win. He had mixed results in the previous year.
Medvedev has played two back-to-back finals at the Australian Open, he will be looking to make it a third time lucky for himself in the year 2023's first major tennis event.
2. Rafael Nadal (Spain)
Nobody in the world will count out a player like Rafael Nadal before a major tournament. 22-time Grand Slam Champion, Rafael Nadal has managed to win the Australian Open twice in his career. In the year 2009 he won his first-ever Australian Open and then again in 2022.
In 2022 Players like Djokovic and Federer could not play. Nadal has won all major titles in his long glorious career and that is what makes him a legend and a top contender even at the age of 36.
1. Novak Djokovic (Serbia)
Novak Djokovic, after last year’s controversy, will be making his comeback in Australian Open. This man has clear domination over the others in this slam event. Djokovic has won Australian Open for a record nine times in his career. If we exclude 2022, where he did not take part, he has won the last three Australian Open titles that he played in.
After the vaccine controversy in the previous year, he made a strong statement on Wimbledon grass court. He became the Wimbledon champion for the seventh time. Even before the start of this tournament experts and fans are expecting him to lift the title for a record 10th time in his career.
