Players with most Grand Slam semi-final appearances in Open Era

The Open Era compiled list for the most Grand Slam semi-final appearances come to a n astonishing grand total of 232 achieved by five tennis players.
The greatness and grandeur of these achievements are to be noted and celebrated by tennis fans globally. Here’s a breakdown of the five players with most semi-final appearances in the open era.
5. Serena Williams (40)
The legendary American, Serena Williams, was peerless in her dominance in the past two decades, prior to her retirement last year. She held the World No. #1 ranking in singles for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No. #1 five times.
In her 40 Slam semi-final appearances, she went on to win 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in the Open Era and the second highest of all time. She remains the only player to accomplish a Career Grand Slam in both singles and doubles categories.
4. Martina Navratilova (44)
The former World No. #1 women’s singles player from Czech Republic, Martina Navratilova, is amongst the greatest female tennis players of all-time. She formed a fierce rivalry with Chris Evert, and the duo competed at the highest level for top spot throughout the 70′ and 80’s. In the Open Era, Navratilova has won 18 major grand slams, 31 slam women’s doubles titles, and 10 slam doubles titles, for a combined total of 59 major titles, which is a record.
She was ranked as World No. #1 in singles for a total of 332 weeks and for a record 237 weeks in doubles. This made her the only player in tennis history to have held the top spot in both disciplines for over 200 weeks. Her status as of the greats is elevated when her 44 semi-final appearances look like a footnote in a legendary career.
3. Roger Federer (46)
The indomitable Swiss legend, Roger Federer, makes it to the second spot with 46 appearances in the semi-finals in a career spanning 20 major men’s grand slam titles, as well as being ranked World No. #2 for 310 weeks. He also has the record of finishing World No. #1 five times in his career including a record 237 weeks as the top seed.
His Grand Slam victories include an Open Era record—a record of eight men’s singles Wimbledon titles and five men’s singles US Open titles. He played in 21 major singles finals in a six-year span between 2003-2009. His only French Open triumph came in 2009, which helped him complete the Career Grand Slam.
2. Novak Djokovic (50)
Arguably the best men’s singles player in history as deemed by many currently, the Serbian great Novak Djokovic made it to 50 after reaching the semi-finals this year. The current World No. #7 has been ranked world No. #1 for a record 428 weeks in a record 15 different years and has finished World No. #1 on record eight occasions.
His Grand Slam record includes a record 24 men’s singles titles, having won 10 Australian Open, seven Wimbledon Championships, four US Open and three Roland Garros. Overall, he has won 99 singles titles, and has the chance to win this 25th Slam and record 11th Australian Open title.
1. Chris Evert (52)
Chris Evert was a former World No. #1 women’s singles player from the USA. Throughout her career, she won 18 major singles grand slams which include seven French Open and six US Open. She stayed as World No. #1 for nearly 260 weeks in her prime and was a dominant force in women’s tennis in the 1970s till the ’80s. Chris Evert also has the honour of reaching 34 major finals, which is still the highest in tennis history.
Even more incredible is the fact that 52 of the 56 majors she’s featured in, including a run which stretched from the 1971 US Open through the 1983 French Open, where she reached 34 consecutive finals. Despite the dominance of Nadal on Clay courts, Evert still remains the undisputed Queen with a 382-22 (95%) WTA Tour Record, on the same surface.
