Davis Cup, World Group II: Indian team announced for tie against Morocco

Davis Cup World Group II tie will be played in Lucknow on September 16 and 17.

All India Tennis Federation (AITA) has announced a six-member squad for the upcoming Davis Cup World Group II tie against Morocco scheduled to be held in Lucknow on September 16th and 17th. Rohan Bopanna, 43, is set to spearhead the national team for one final at the Davis Cup.

Sumit Nagal, India's top singles player will shoulder the responsibilities in the singles section alongside compatriot Sasikumar Mukund. Yuki Bhambri and Rohan Bopanna are most likely to combine for the doubles. Delhi's Digvijay Pratap Singh has made his maiden entry into the national side after playing considerably well at the ITF circuits.

Sumit Nagal, Sasikumar Mukund, Rohan Bopanna, Digvijay Pratap Singh, Yuki Bhambri, and Ramkumar Ramanathan.

The AITA iterated the players were selected after “careful consideration of various factors, including players’ rankings, availability, performance and current form.” Apart from the six-member team, an additional five-member reserves squad has been setup to train alongside the main team.

Reserve team - Saketh Myneni, Manas Dhamne, Manish Sureshkumar, Karan Singh, and Yuvan Nandal. Out of the five players three of them are aged below 20 and have a good chance of plying their trade alongside several high-quality players. Karan Singh in the past few months has had good results in the ITF circuit and recently qualified into the main draw of a Challenger 50 event.

Saketh Myneni who is part of the Asian Games squad misses out of the Davis Cup team. India lost their previous Davis Cup (World Group playoff qualifier) tie against Denmark (2-3) which resulted in getting relegated to Group II.
