The American will be one of the favourites to win US Open title next week

When Karolina Muchova missed a forehand return on her fourth match point, Coco Gauff, the runner-up at the French Open 2022, earned her maiden Masters title, in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).

On Sunday (July 20th), the American teenage sensation overthrew the French Open 2023 runner-up in straight sets in less than two hours to earn the biggest victory of her career and make history as the youngest WTA Cincinnati Open champion. Notably, this was Gauff’s and Muchova’s first professional encounter.

The American youngster advanced to the Cincinnati Open 2023 final on Saturday by defeating world number one Iga Swiatek for the first time in eight meetings.

Achievements

Gauff is the first teenage finalist since Vera Zvonareva in 2004 and the competition’s fourth teenage finalist overall. Since 17-year-old Linda Tuero in 1968, Gauff is the first teenage champion having a 38-13 record this season. Further, Gauff also became the first teenager since Bianca Andreescu in 2019, to win three championships in a season after winning in Auckland Open in January and Washington Open two weeks back.

The 19-year-old is also the only youngest tennis player to have won five career championships since Caroline Wozniacki in 2008-2009. She joins Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, and Madison Keys as the only other Americans to have won the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
