The American reached the milestone with her win over Elina Svitolina in the Citi Open quarter-finals in Washington.
In the world of professional tennis, consistency is a trait that sets players apart and solidifies their presence on the global stage. One such player who has made waves with her remarkable consistency is America’s Jessica Pegula.
Hailing from a sports-oriented family – her parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. However, she chose tennis as her calling, and made her debut on the WTA tour in 2011. She started competing in professional tournaments and gradually worked her way up in the tennis world.
Since 2021, Jessica Pegula has achieved the remarkable feat of registering 35+ wins in consecutive WTA seasons, a feat accomplished after Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who is the current number one in the WTA rankings. She achieved this feat by defeating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Citi Open in Washington and advanced to the semi-finals.
Top seed at the Citi Open 2023, Jessica Pegular had to come back from a set down to beat the Ukrainian Svitolina and seal her place in the semi-finals.
She has been in fine form post COVID-19 and also won her maiden WTA 1000 title in singles at the Guadalajara Open in 2022 where she defeated Maria Sakkari in straight sets. The title win made the first American to win a WTA 1000 title since Madison Keys in 2019. It also helped her achieve her career best rankings of World No. 3 in singles. She is currently ranked fourth in the WTA rankings.
With each victory, she not only secures her own legacy but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring tennis players around the world. Her journey exemplifies the values of hard work, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
