Top players to watch out for in Davis Cup Finals 2023

Novak Djokovic will look to win Serbia it's second title.

The Davis Cup is the premier men’s team event, with players representing their respective countries. The premier team event is now in its final leg as eight teams meet in Malaga, Spain, to decide who will be crowned the champion for the current season. The matches between from the quarterfinals stage will take place between 21-26 November. 

Fixtures in the Davis Cup Finals consist of two singles and one doubles match. All matches will be played as best of three sets. The final leg of the competition boasts of top names like Novak Djokovic, Cameron Norrie and Jannik Sinner to name a few.

In this article let's take a look at the top players to watch out for in Davis Cup Finals 2023:

Novak Djokovic:

The Serbian world no.1 shrugged off a slow start in the group stage to reach the final stages of Nitto ATP Finals 2023. In the final, he brushed aside the challenge of Jannik Sinner in straight sets and crushed the hopes of the Italian of repeating the win over him. Novak Djokovic will be hoping to deliver Serbia it's second Davis Cup title, with the previous title coming over a decade ago in 2010.

Felix Auger-Aliassime:

Felix Auger-Aliassime will lead defending champions Canada in their quarter-final clash with Finland. He is the top-ranked Canadian player, who achieved a career-high world no. 6 in 2022 but is currently ranked World No. 29. The Canadian delivered wins against Djokovic at last year’s Laver Cup and Carlos Alcaraz in the 2022 Basel Indoor semi-final round and successfully defended his Basel Indoor title in 2023. 

Emil Ruusuvuori:

Emil Ruusuvuori will spearhead the Finnish team making their debut in the Davis Cup Finals. The 24-year-old Helsinki native, advanced to his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final in Miami earlier this but lost to Sinner in a close battle. He reached a career-high ranking of No. 37 in April and is currently ranked in the 69th spot. 

Jiri Lehecka

Jiri Lehecka, the top-ranked Czech player, was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open 2023 and came close to winning his first tour-level title at the Winston-Salem Open against Argentinian Sebastian Baez. Lehecka is currently ranked World No. 31. He is set to play a vital role for Czech Republic's in their campaign in final eight.

Alex de Minaur:

Alex de Minaur, two-time Next Gen ATP Finals runner-up, achieved a career-high ranking of world no. 12 in August 2023 after reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Toronto. He got the better of higher seeds Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev en route to the final but lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Australia, along with Canada, have automatically qualified for the Davis Cup Finals 2023, as they were last edition's runner-ups and title holders. 

Jannik Sinner:

The young Italian recently made it to the Nitto ATP Finals summit clash alongside Novak Djokovic, where he finished runner-up. The current world no. 4 has had a good run in season, beating world no. 3 Daniil Medvedev three times in a row at Vienna, Beijing and Turin. Sinner also bagged his first ever Masters title - the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto, beating Australian Alex de Minaur in straight sets.

More importantly he recorded his maiden win against Djokovic at the recently concluded ATP Finals 2023.

Cameron Norrie:

Cameron Norrie will be leading Great Britain who is set to face Serbia led by world no.1 Novak Djokovic. Norrie has had a good season overall winning the Rio Open by beating Alcaraz in the final and followed it up with an appearance in the ATP Masters 1000 held at Indian Wells. Alongside Norrie, Andy Murray who was part of the 2015 winning team, is also part of the squad.
