She reached the final of French Open.

A wrist injury that forced Karolina Muchova to withdraw from the WTA Finals in Cancun will also keep her out of the Australian Open 2024 in January. The 27-year-old, who is ranked no. 8 in the world, will miss the first Grand Slam next year after having a breakthrough season in 2023.

She reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open, where she lost to world no. 1 Iga Swiatek, and then made the semifinals at the US Open, where she was beaten by Coco Gauff, the ultimate champion.

Muchova suffered wrist injury during her run at Flushing Meadows and has not been able to recover fully since then. She skipped the tournaments in Tokyo and Beijing, hoping to be fit for the WTA Finals in Cancun, where she had earned a spot for the first time.

However, she had to pull out of the elite event as well and was replaced by Maria Sakkari, the next in line. Muchova announced the news of her withdrawal on Instagram, saying that she was “heartbroken” and “frustrated” by the situation.

She said that the wrist pain flared up again in the middle of her preparation and that she had to delay the start of her season and focus on healing. “This isn’t my favorite thing to share, especially at the start of a new season,” she wrote on Instagram.

“But unfortunately the pain in the wrist came back in the middle of my preparation. I therefore have to postpone the start of the season and fully heal my wrist first. It’s frustrating but I have to keep positive, recover, and get ready for the rest of the year.” Further Muchova thanked her fans for their support and said that she would do her best to come back stronger in 2024.

This will be the second time in three years that Muchova will skip the Australian Open, the season-opening Grand Slam. She made the semifinals in 2021, where she lost to Jennifer Brady, who then lost to Naomi Osaka in the final. She did not play in 2022, and only made the second round in 2023, where she lost to Danielle Collins in a close three-setter.
