Sinner won both their meetings last year.
The Australian Open 2024 is now at the business end as the last eight have been decided, with all the top six seeds having made it through. While it’s a foregone conclusion that the Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas re-match will not happen, a Djokovic-Sinner face-off is definitely on the cards. For a re-match between the two, Sinner will have to find a way past Andrey Rublev.
While the Italian cruised through in his last two matches, he had to dig deep against Karen Khachanov. The result mirrored the first-round result against Botic van de Zandschulp — a gritty straight-set win over Khachanov (6-4, 7-5, 6-3). The win confirmed Sinner’s status as a serious title contender for what would be his first major title.
Andrey Rublev survived a challenging first round against unseeded Brazilain Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first of two five-setters to prevail in a decisive fifth set tiebreak 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6(6).
Jannik Sinner vs Andrey Rublev Preview
From dropping just nine games in the second and third rounds, the fourth-seeded Jannik Sinner found himself tested as the Sinner and Khachanov exchanged aces and a flurry of high-speed serves crossing 200 km/h. The Italian made 34 unforced errors in the match, nearly half coming in the second set alone.
The Nitto ATP finalist’s successful defence of 9 of the ten break points he faced while converting five of the eight opportunities he got was instrumental in his fourth-round win over 15th-seed Karen Khachanov.
The hunt for the first Australian male champion at Melbourne Park continues. Andrey Rublev ended Alex de Minaur’s bid to be the first Aussie since Mark Edmonson to hold aloft the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. Rublev claimed his 300th career win over the 10th-ranked de Minaur in a rollercoaster five-setter at the Australian Open Sunday night.
After taking the first set, the Russian lost the next two sets in tiebreaks and was staring at defeat but rebounded by breaking the Australian’s opening service games in the fourth and fifth sets to clinch a 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0 victory after four hours, 14 minutes. Rublev also sent down the fastest serve of the match, 213 km/h.

Head-to-head records
Matches – 6
Jannik Sinner – 4
Andrey Rublev – 2
Andrey Rublev will be looking to reach his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final, while Jannik Sinner’s thoughts will be towards bettering his semifinal appearance at Wimbledon 2023. The Italian is yet to reach the final of a Grand Slam. The presence of the ‘Carota Boys’, who have followed the fourth-ranked Italian to Melbourne, will no doubt give him the encouragement he needs.
Sinner holds a 2-0 edge over Rublev in 2023, leading the Russian in their head-to-head 4-2. Their most recent match-up at Vienna went in Sinner’s favour, an event the Italian went on to win. The winner will go on to face the winner of the quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz in the yet-to-be-scheduled semi-final.
