Tennis is a sport that attracts many aspiring players who dream of reaching the top and earning fame and glory. However, only a handful of them manage to achieve that feat, while the rest remain in the shadows, hoping for a breakthrough.
Some of them, like Jules Marie, have found a way to combine their passion for tennis with their online presence. Marie is not only a professional tennis player but also a popular YouTuber who offers tips and tricks on how to play the game. He has more than 100,000 subscribers on his channel and a top 300 ranking on the ATP Tour.
If you are curious to know more about this unique personality, here are five facts about Jules Marie, the YouTuber and tennis player.
How he got into tennis?
Unlike many other sportspersons who were influenced by their family members or relatives to take up a sport, Marie discovered tennis on his own. He saw a friend playing tennis at school and decided to give it a try.
He also played other sports like basketball, football, swimming and judo, but eventually chose tennis as his main focus. He entered the Pepperstone ATP Rankings for the first time at the age of 19.
Career Highlights
Marie reached his career-high ranking of World No. 228 in March 2015 and in the same year he defeated some notable players like Robin Haase, Tallon Griekspoor, Zhang Zhizhen and Ilya Ivashka. All of them, except for Zhang Zhizhen who is ranked World No. 52, are currently in the top 50.
He also participated in the qualifying rounds of Roland Garros in May 2015, but his career took a downward turn after that. He quit the tour in September 2015 following a seven-match losing streak.
YouTube Journey
After leaving the tour, Marie turned his attention to YouTube, where he started sharing his tennis knowledge and skills with his fans. He has uploaded 640 videos on his channel so far and some of them have received almost 300,000 views.
His channel has a total of 19m views. He also posts videos of his own matches for his viewers to watch and learn from.
Comeback & recent success
Marie did not give up on his tennis career completely. He resumed playing on the ATP Tour, but mostly in challenger and ITF events. He gradually improved his ranking and reached his personal best of World No. 224 in February 2024.
He also pulled off a stunning upset over former World No. 18 Benoit Paire in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open Qualifiers. He beat Paire 7-6 (6) 6-4 to advance to the next round.
Goals & Ambitions
Marie has stated that his goals are to enjoy his tennis and content creation, while also aiming to climb higher in the rankings and make his fans happy. He also wants to play in all four Grand Slam tournaments, as he takes a second shot at his tennis career.
In the meantime, he continues to provide his YouTube followers with a glimpse into the life and challenges of a lower-ranked tennis player.
