Andy Murray was forced to retire against Jordan Thompson during the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships.
An old video of British tennis star Andy Murray has started resurfacing on social media after the three-time Grand Slam winner stated that he’d retire soon.
During a recent interview, the two-time Wimbledon champion addressed his retirement. Murray has struggled to stay consistent and complete regular tournaments for the last few years. Moreover, Murray’s hip and knee injuries are also well-documented.
The 37-year-old affirmed that he would retire after the upcoming Wimbledon Championships of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Both tournaments have played a substantial role in the Brit’s professional career.
Meanwhile, he’s the only tennis player in Olympic history to defend a gold medal. He won the topmost prize at the 2012 London Games by beating Swiss legend Roger Federer. He later defended his gold medal by defeating Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in the 2016 Rio Olympics final.
Murray has been named to Great Britain’s Paris Olympic tennis squad. The other names on the team are Daniel Evans, Jack Draper, and Cameron Norrie.
In the video, 14-year-old Murray can be seen talking about his future aspirations. The Brit stated that he wants to play at the All England Championships in the coming years, and that’s his main ambition.
He said, “Hopefully I’ll be playing in Wimbledon in about four years in seniors and maybe junior Wimbledon in two years, but I think that’s probably one of my main ambitions, to play there.”
Unfortunately, Murray was forced to retire from the second round of the Queen’s Club Championships on Wednesday while he was facing Australia’s Jordan Thompson. The 37-year-old was suffering from back issues. Thus, with the recent fitness issues, his chances of playing at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics are hindered, especially due to the change in surface.
