Ben Shelton is the defending champion in Japan Open 2024.

Ben Shelton, the 21-year-old American, won the Japan Open Tennis Championships last season, defeating Aslan Karatsev in straight sets. It was Shelton’s maiden win on the ATP Tour, giving him a top 15 ranking for the first time.

Fellow American Taylor Fritz won the Japan Open title in 2022, while Shelton will return to Tokyo hoping to make it the third American victory on Japanese soil. Shelton will have an eye on the ATP Finals 2024 to be played in Turin and a second title run in Japan will bring him closer to making his debut at the year-ending event.

American interests at the ATP Japan Open 2024 will be well-represented by the presence of Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe among the seeded players. US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper is also on the list as the sole player from Great Britain in the singles draw. Draper opens his campaign against a qualifier. Local players Kei Nishikori, Yoshihito Nishioka and Shintaro Mochizuki have been given wildcards into the main draw.

The 2022 champion, Taylor Fritz has suffered a shock defeat to unseeded Frenchman Arthur Fils. Defending champion Ben Shelton has secured a three-set win against fellow American Reilly Opelka. Other opening round matches saw Hubert Hurkacz defeating Marcos Giron and Alexei Popyrin being upset by Tomas Machac. Another worthwhile face-off saw No. 7 seed Frances Tiafoe being stunned by unseeded countryman Brandon Nakashima.
