Camila Giorgi retired from tennis in May, two months after playing her last professional match against Iga Swiatek in Miami.
Former Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi retired from the sport earlier this year in May, aged 32. She played her last professional match against Iga Swiatek of Poland in the second round of the Miami Open.
Her best finish at a Grand Slam came in 2018 when she reached the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Championships. Unseeded Giorgi lost to eventual runner-up Serena Williams in three sets. The former Italian tennis star won a total of four singles titles in her professional career, and her career-best ranking was 26, which she acquired in October 2018.
However, during her tennis career, she also worked as a model. After announcing her retirement from professional tennis, she has started working as a model. Nevertheless, as per the Sun, she has been accused of stealing antiques and failing to pay six months of rent before fleeing to the US.
As per Italian outlet La Gazzetta Dello Sport, the former WTA star fled to the US to avoid questioning by her native country’s financial police. In addition to that, before leaving for America, Camila Giorgi lived in a rental property in Calenzano, Tuscany.
The landlord of the property told La Repubblica that Camila Giorgi fled to America without paying the rent for six months. He also added that the former tennis player’s family also stole the furniture. He said, “They made half of our furniture disappear. Persian rugs, fine furniture, even an antique half-ton table. We are talking about damage between 50 and 100 thousand euros.”
However, countering all the allegations, Giorgi’s lawyer, Edmondo Tomaselli has now spoken out in her defence. He said, “Camila Giorgi is in Rome. In recent months she has been away for professional reasons. In short, she has not run away at all, as some have claimed. It’s all just talk, no desire not to be found, just personal commitments.”
He also stated that the former Wimbledon quarterfinalist had always been available on Instagram to her fans. Additionally, she also announced her retirement on her Instagram story after a two-month hiatus from the sport.
