Danielle Collins has won two titles this season.

American tennis star Danielle Collins has withdrawn from the WTA 1000 China Open 2024 due to an illness. Her sudden withdrawal from the tournament has made her an unlikely candidate for the WTA Finals.

Collins, who will retire from professional tennis at the end of the ongoing season, will miss the China Open due to illness. Currently no. #10 in the WTA world rankings, the American tennis star has a win/loss record of 39/15 this year. In addition to that, she has also won two titles.

She won the Miami Open by defeating Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the final. Later, she continued her brilliant form by stunning Daria Kasatkina in the final of the Charleston Open 6-2, 6-1. However, her 15-match winning streak was halted by Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16 of the Madrid Open.

Danielle Collins reached the semifinals at the Italian Open and ended as a runner-up in Strasbourg after losing to countrywomen Jessica Pegula. However, her form started declining after the French Open, and she has played only four tournaments since then.

Collins reached the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships, going down against the eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. However, she lost in the first round of the Monterrey Open, the US Open, and the Guadalajara Open. The reason behind her lacklustre performance could be her health, which caused her to withdraw from the China Open.

In the race singles rankings, she’s in the eighth spot with 3178 points. Behind her, 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng is in the ninth spot with 3070 points, and she will play in Beijing as the tournament will begin on September 26.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the tournament. However, she’s expected to return at the Wuhan Open as she will aim to finish the year at the WTA World No. #1. Meanwhile, apart from Danielle Collins, Elina Svitolina won’t return this season due to her foot surgery and the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sakkari, and Ons Jabeur have already pulled out.

With all these big names out of the WTA 1000 tournament, Aryna Sabalenka is the top favourite to win the tournament. However, the likes of American tennis stars, namely, Emma Navarro and Jessica Pegula, can also win the title in the Chinese capital.
