The Cincinnati Open is Aryna Sabalenka’s second title of the season.
Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka defeated America’s Jessica Pegula to win Cincinnati Open 2024 title in straight sets.
The 26-year-old didn’t drop a single set through her campaign. Interestingly, since 2004, the Belarusian tennis star has become only the third player to win the title at the Cincinnati Open without dropping a set after Vera Zvonareva in 2006 and Ashleigh Barty in 2021.
The win was also Sabalenka’s 100th win at the WTA 1000 event out of the 143 matches she has played at such tournaments. It was Sabalenka’s fifth final of the season, she played in the summit clash at the Brisbane International, Australian Open, Madrid Open, Italian Open, and lately, the Cincinnati Masters.
However, she has only won two of those finals. In Melbourne, she defeated Qinwen Zheng of China 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets. In Cincinnati, she went invincible against the likes of Iga Swiatek, Elina Svitolina, and Jessica Pegula to win the WTA 1000 title.
After the win, she took to social media and uploaded a couple of pictures with the Cincinnati Open trophy. In the pictures, she can be seen posing alongside the Cincinnati accolade.
During her post-match on-court interview, she stated that the win means a lot to her, especially when he’s returning from an injury. The Belarusian tennis star had to withdraw from the Wimbledon Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics due to shoulder pain.
She said, “This trophy means a lot, it is a really big achievement, especially coming after injury, with this fear of getting injured again. My team did everything they could to make sure I felt as good as I can and I am proud of myself I was able to handle all of those emotions.”
Last year’s finalist, Aryna Sabalenka, will be seeded second at the 2024 US Open. Winning the Cincinnati Masters will help her gain momentum ahead of the last Grand Slam of the season. Sabalenka is a two-time Australian Open champion, and she’s keen to add a US Open title to her trophy cabinet.
