The Davis Cup 2024 is about to reach its business end as Germany takes on Netherlands followed by Italy vs Australia at Spain’s Palacio Deportes Martin Carpena. Germany secured their spot with a clinical 2-0 victory over Canada after Jan-Lennard Struff, world No. #43 defeated Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) in a nerve-wracking contest which saw Shapovalov make 13 costly double faults which come after Daniel Altmaier had earlier put Germany ahead after dispatching Gabriel Diallo 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.
The three-time champions who last lifted the trophy in 1993 now face a resurgent Dutch team that made history by eliminating hosts Spain; That victory was powered by Botic van de Zandschulp’s straight-sets win over Rafael Nadal in what became the Spanish legend’s final professional match.
The Netherlands are chasing their first-ever Davis Cup final appearance since their semi-final run in 2001 have been resilient to say the least and was to be seen when Van de Zandschulp partnered with Wesley Koolhof to clinch a decisive 2-1 victory over Spain.
The tournament’s other semi-final pairs defending champions Italy against Australia on Saturday. Italy advanced through after a tense battle with Argentina which was spearheaded by world No. #1 Jannik Sinner who continued his remarkable run after winning 27 wins in his last 28 matches.
The knockout format features best-of-three ties with two singles matches and a potential doubles decider. The winners will battle for the trophy on Sunday, November 24.
Italy currently holds the crown after ending their 47-year drought last year when Sinner defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in a memorable final.
