Djokovic, Nadal cruise to wins, Krejcikova crashes out of French Open

There were a few surprising results on the second day of the tournament.

The French Open 2022 is underway with plenty of top players across the board at Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France. One of the Grand Slams on the calendar has sensational bit of tennis on display. The clay surface makes the game more challenging for the players and entertaining for the fans. During the second day of the tournament, lots of high-profile players took to the court.

While major contenders like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal easily progressed to the next round, there were a few surprise outcomes elsewhere. World No.1 in Men’s rankings, Djokovic cruised past Yoshihito Nishioka by a 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 score. The King of Clay also won his first round match in straight games. He beat Jordan Thompson by 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to advance in the tournament.

In Women’s Singles, World No.1 Iga Swiatek defeated Lesia Tsurenko thanks to a 6-2, 6-0 score. However, in one of the biggest shocks of the day, World No.2 and defending French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova lost her first round match to Diane Parry by 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.

"It's a dream for me. It was always a dream to play on this court, with the French crowd to support me. They clearly pushed me to victory today. I'm the happiest person right now," an elated Parry told the reporters after the French Open match. 

Results elsewhere

Marin Cilic, World No.20, secured an easy win by 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 against Attila Balazs. However, World No.17 Reily Opelka lost to Filip Krajinovic by 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 in one of the upsets of the day at the French Open. The crowd at Roland Garros was also witness to a five-setter contest between World No. 22 Nikoloz Basilashvili and Maxime Cressy which was won by the former thanks to a 3-6, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 score.

Over in the Women’s Singles, Naomi Osaka crashed out after losing by 7-5, 6-4 to World No. 27 Amanda Anisimova. World No.12 and the reigning US Open Champions Emma Raducanu defeated Linda Noskova by 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 to enter second round. Another major upset in Women’s Singles saw World No. 5 Anett Kontaveit lose to Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets at the French Open.
