Russia’s Anastasia Potapova is making her second week debut in Paris, in the fourth round.

Iga Swiatek took her 17th straight match in Roland Garros when she won her third-round face-off against Marie Bouzkova at the French Open 2024 on Friday. The 6-4, 6-2 win came on her birthday and rang in 105th week overall as World No. #1 for Swiatek.

Swiatek’s second round against Naomi Osaka saw her survive a scare as the Japanese player came within a point of sending the three-time French Open champion home early. Osaka took some sheen off the top seed’s French Open journey when she pushed Swiatek to the brink in the three-set affair.

In a match worthy of a final, Osaka bounced back in the second set 6-1 after losing the first 6-7(1). Leading 5-3 in the third set, Osaka let Swiatek climb back into the match with a few errant backhands. A double fault at 5-5 gave Swiatek a crucial 6-5 advantage, which the Pole made the most of. It was game, set, and match for Swiatek when she clinched the next game thanks to another Osaka backhand that flew long at 40-15.

Anastasia Potapova reached the second week of the French Open for the first time on Friday with a 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-4 win over Chinese Wang Xinyu. It took two hours and 50 minutes to move past the Chinese woman. The Russian is also in the second week of the clay court major for the first time in her career.

Potapova, ranked World No. #41 in the WTA Rankings, takes on top seed Iga Swiatek for a chance to move into the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Iga Swiatek vs Anastasia Potapova preview

As has been the common thread in recent tournaments, Swiatek finds herself on the opposite side of Aryna Sabalenka. The duo have met in two consecutive finals in the recent past, with Swiatek emerging triumphant each time. The events in question are the Rome and Madrid WTA 1000 events.

Standing in Iga’s way of a possible quarter-final with Marketa Vondrousova is Anastasia Potapova. The Russian breezed past her first two rounds against fellow Russian Kamilla Rakhimova and Swiss Vikotorija Golubic in straight sets.

Potential semifinalists for Swiatek or Potapova are Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur. Gauff booked a spot in the round of 16 without dropping a set. At the same time, Jabeur made her way into the fourth round, dropping a set in her second-round match against Columbian Camila Osorio.

Prediction

Despite a significant hiccup in the second round against Naomi Osaka, where she ended up being pushed to the brink, the momentum remains with Swiatek. The odds are in favour of the Polish star putting up another good performance in her fourth-round face-off against Potapova.

Swiatek has reached the round of 16 for the sixth year in a row, besides having a 31-2 record on the clay courts of Roland Garros since her first main draw appearance in 2019.

Anastasia Potapova has done one better than last year by making a round of 16 debut. It is also the farthest she has gone since making the main draw at the clay court major in 2019 — the same year as Iga Swiatek. In contrast to Swiatek’s record in Roland Garros, Potapova trails with a 4-4 record at the venue.

Swiatek has won all five of her last five matches, while Potapova has won three of five. The Polish World No. #1 has won 84% of service games from the 377 played this season. She has also won 47% of return games and converted an identical percentage of breakpoints. Potapova has won 64.4% of 261 service games played, won 34.4% of return games and converted 43.2% of breakpoint opportunities.

Swiatek will bring her A-game as always and can expect an easy day at the office.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
