Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka will face each other for the first time on clay.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is set to face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round at the French Open 2024. The Polish tennis star has been flawless on the WTA Tour since last month, while Osaka is still trying to make a return to the red dirt.

Swiatek won the 2024 Madrid Open and Italian Open, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final of both tournaments. Moreover, she was already a three-time Roland-Garros champion before turning 23. Swiatek has made clay her territory and facing the Pole at the French Open will always be an uphill battle for any player.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka has won four Grand Slam titles on hard court. She won her first Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows in 2018, where she defeated six-time US Open singles champion Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4. However, she has never made it past the third round at the French Open or Wimbledon.

Iga Swiatek vs Naomi Osaka Preview

Iga Swiatek is currently in her prime. The Polish tennis star lost her last match more than a month ago at the Stuttgart Open against World No. 4 Elena Rybakina. Since then, she has been on a 13-match unbeaten streak.

Taking a look at Swiatek’s record at the French Open, the 22-year-old has won 38 out of the 42 matches she has played at Roland-Garros. In addition, she has won 29 of her first 31 matches at the clay court Grand Slam.

Only Monica Seles and Chris Evert have won more (30) matches than the Pole. Swiatek faced no issues against France’s Leolia Jeanjean in her first round match, as he recorded a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory.

A few days ago, Naomi Osaka also lauded Iga Swiatek for her consistency. Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion; however, she won her last major title in 2021. Since then, her performances have been heavily affected by injuries and health concerns.

She was also away from the game for a long period due to her pregnancy. The Japanese tennis star returned to the game earlier this year at the Brisbane International. However, her struggles have continued.

In her first match at the 2024 French Open against Lucia Bronzetti, Naomi Osaka looked calm as her shots were precise. Hence, she can give Swiatek tough competition at Stade Roland Garros with her experience.
