Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka faced World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the second round at the 2024 French Open. The first set turned out to be a furious fight between the two tennis stars and it was eventually forced into a tiebreak. Swaitek dominated the tiebreak and won the set 7-6 (7-1).
In the second set, Naomi Osaka broke Iga Swiatek’s serve thrice and easily levelled the match 1-6. With Osaka’s improved confidence and tantalizing forehands, it seemed like the tennis world would witness a huge upset in the Round of 64.
After winning the first game, the Japanese tennis star broke Swiatek’s serve and made the score 0-2. When the Pole won her first game in the third set, the scoreline read 1-3. Swiatek was constantly failing to answer Osaka’s powerful forehands, as the 26-year-old was only one point away from winning the match in the eighth game of the set.
Nevertheless, due to increased unforced errors, Osaka lost the match 7-6, 1-6, 7-5. In the post-match press conference, Naomi Osaka revealed that she cried after losing the match, she had almost won. The 26-year-old also stated that she watched the Polish tennis star win the 2023 French Open while she was pregnant.

The Japanese tennis star said, “I’ve felt worse before, for sure. I cried after the match. But, I watched Iga win Roland-Garros last year while I was pregnant, so I can’t be too hard on myself. I played her on her best surface. I’m a hard court child.”
Osaka further added that she wants to face Iga Swiatek on the hard court, which is her preferred surface. She said, “It was my dream just to play her. I think I did pretty well against her on her surface. I want to play her on hard courts, my surface. It was a very fun match, probably the most fun I’ve played… very memorable.”
