Holger Rune will be making his Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Games.
Danish tennis star Holger Rune has clarified the reason behind his withdrawal from the quarterfinals of the 2024 German Open.
The former ATP World No. #4 retired halfway through his match against Frenchman Arthur Fils in the quarterfinals of the 2024 German Open on Friday. Fils was winning the match 6-4, 4-1; however, the fixture took an unfortunate turn as Rune had to retire.
The 21-year-old later took to Instagram and clarified the reason behind his withdrawal from the match. He revealed that he was trying to play but due to knee problems, he had to retire. Rune also stated that a knee issue had hampered his performance since the first match of the tournament.
He wrote on social media, “So sorry guys. My knee had caused problems since the incident in the first match. Yesterday was bad. Today I tried it wasn’t good.”

Holger Rune reached the fourth round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships with wins over Kwon Soon-Woo, Thiago Seyboth Wild and Quentin Halys. However, his campaign came to an end against Novak Djokovic in the pre-quarterfinals, where he lost 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Tennis enthusiasts can now expect to see the Dane playing at the Croatia Open, starting the next week. Rune’s performance on the ATP tour has always been restricted by injuries. Last year, he took some time off from tennis due to a back issue. Since his return, he has failed to win any title on the tour.
This year, the 21-year-old has played 39 matches, losing 14 and he’s yet to win a title. Additionally, he has also moved out of the top 10 as he’s currently ranked 17 by the ATP. Moreover, Rune also wants to win a medal for Denmark at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
He said before the tournament, “I’m looking forward to starting the second clay season of the year, and I’m excited for the Olympics. The tournament here in Hamburg is also super important in terms of getting ready for that. The temperature in Paris might be a bit different than in Hamburg, but it’s good to be back on clay. Hopefully, I’ll get a lot of matches and a lot of good training sessions throughout the week.”
