Iga Swiatek's projected path to Canadian Open 2025 final

The second seed will mark her first appearance since winning the Wimbledon 2025 title.

Iga Swiatek stunned the entire tennis fraternity when she stormed her way to winning a maiden Wimbledon title this year. Not only was her grass record mediocre before this year, but her form had also been poor, because of which she slipped to eighth in the WTA rankings.

Since winning her fourth French Open title in 2024, the Pole has failed to win a single trophy and has faced a tough time in the 2025 clay season. However, she bounced back in style at SW19 and would be looking to script more history during this North American hard-court swing.

As the second seed, she will face most top-ranked players in the second half of the tournament, but due to the WTA’s vast talent depth, Swiatek will certainly have her task cut out to make it through to the top four. The 24-year-old’s best campaign in the Canadian Open came in 2023, when she reached the semi-final.

Iga Swiatek’s projected path-

Round 1 – Bye

Round 2 – Yulia Putintseva / Qualifier

Yulia Putintseva has suffered three straight opening-round defeats in the last three tournaments and is suffering a sharp decline in form. Till some time back, she was in the top 30, but is currently ranked 46th. Interestingly, the Kazakh defeated Swiatek when they met previously at Wimbledon 2024.

However, given Putintseva’s poor form lately, in contrast to Swiatek, who will play her first match on hard courts following her triumph in Wimbledon, the second seed is certainly expected to advance through to the third round.

Round 3 – Eva Lys / Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova produced an impressive performance and enjoyed her time on grass after a miserable clay season.

The Russian will hope to continue her good form in Canada, and if she manages to do so, she could create some problems for Swiatek. The Pole will have a psychological boost, having never lost to Pavlyuchenkova before, with her most recent win coming at the US Open last year.

Eva Lys has been struggling for form over the last few months, and if she makes it to the third round, she won’t be able to cause any trouble for Iga Swiatek.

Round 4 – Clara Tauson / Magdalena Frech / Lucia Bronzetti

A re-match of the Wimbledon round of 16 is likely between Swiatek and Clara Tauson. The Pole had brushed aside the Danish without any trouble and is expected to put on a similar performance should they meet again.

Magdalena Frech is another likely contender, who reached the quarter-finals of the Washington Open last, but lost in a one-sided affair.

Quarter-final – Madison Keys / Belinda Bencic

Swiatek could meet Australian Open champion Madison Keys again in a quarter-final. The American has struggled since her incredible triumph in Melbourne, but returning to familiar conditions on home soil might give her the much-needed boost to turn her season around.

Keys cannot be overlooked for the hard-court swing, as her strong serving and return game make her a contender. Swiatek leads the head-to-head overall, but Keys has the upper hand on hard courts against the Pole. Belinda Bencic could be an easier opponent for Swiatek, given her dominating outing against the Swiss at the recently concluded Grand Slam.

Semi-final – Jessica Pegula / Amanda Anisimova / Elina Svitolina / Jeļena Ostapenko / Liudmila Samsonova

Jessica Pegula is one of the favorites for the entire hard-court swing and is also a two-time defending champion in Canada. The American reached the US Open final last year, and her season so far has been an impressive one, albeit a relatively poor grass season.

Moreover, this is a rare battle which Swiatek has not dominated, with Pegula winning the duo’s previous two exchanges, including a US Open quarter-final.

Amanda Anisimova is another dangerous opponent, thanks to her hard-hitting and explosive playing style that can easily overwhelm her opponent. Moreover, she would be seeking revenge after her humiliating 6-0, 6-0 defeat at the 2025 Wimbledon final.

Jeļena Ostapenko is an unpredictable player, but her flawless 6-0 record against Swiatek makes her a favorite to reach the final, if she reaches the final four. Plenty of challenging opponents could meet Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, and the Pole will have to produce her best level to reach the Canadian Open final for the first time.

Final – Coco Gauff / Jasmine Paolini / Mirra Andreeva / Elena Rybakina / Emma Navarro

Local hope and former US Open champion Coco Gauff is the top seed in the absence of Aryna Sabalenka. The American is expected to put up a strong performance on his favorite ground with the support of the home crowd. She has the edge over Swiatek recently, having won their previous three duels.

Mirra Andreeva, the dangerous 18-year-old, won her maiden 1000 Masters event on a hard court at the start of the season. Having now established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the tour, she will be a strong contender for the title.

Jasmine Paolini lost her way in the grass season and needs a good hard-court swing to climb up the rankings. However, her poor record suggests it’s unlikely for her to qualify for the title clash. Elena Rybakina is another potential contender, but the Kazakh has struggled to maintain consistency at times, and her serve has also let her down recently.
