Both players won their fourth-round matches against all odds.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek prevailed over Elena Rybakina, to win her 25th straight match at Roland Garros. The Pole did not have it easy, as the Kazakh looked invincible in the first set, winning it 6-1. Rybakina continued to mount pressure, breaking Swiatek early in the second set to go a set and break up.

It seemed to be going down very quickly for the four-time French Open winner, when Swiatek finally managed to hold serve, and exerted pressure which led to an avalanche of mistakes from Rybakina’s end. The third set was extremely competitive, with both players breaking their opponent’s serve, but the Queen of Clay proved to be too good for her rival in the end.

Swiatek will now face Elina Svitolina for a semi-final berth. She continues to keep her hopes of retaining her French Open crown alive, and emerging victorious from challenging circumstances against a former Grand Slam champion will do wonders to the former World No. 1’s morale.

Match details

  • Tournament: French Open 2025
  • Round: Quarter-Final
  • Date: June 3
  • Venue: Stade Roland Garros, Paris
  • Surface: Clay Court

Preview

Svitolina has won the highest number of matches on clay in 2025. She kicked off the clay season with a title, and reached the semi-finals in Madrid, and quarter-final in Rome. The Ukrainian pulled off an insane comeback against 2024 finalist Jasmine Paolini.

After losing the first set comprehensively, Svitolina found herself down to three match points in the second set. But the 30-year-old fought back to not only force a decider set but dominated the World No #4 and advanced to the next round.

Both players will feel they got out of jail heading into the quarters. This is their first meeting on clay since 2021. Their latest exchange took place a few months ago in Miami, which the World No. 5 won, in straight sets.

Match prediction

Both these women have proved how mentally tough they are, following their tremendous comeback in the round of 16. Swiatek is now finding her full range, and is arguably the toughest to beat on this surface. Svitolina hasn’t found much success against the Pole historically, but is certain to challenge her, given her never-to-die attitude.

Having said that, it is difficult to bet against the four-time Paris winner, particularly after her statement win against Elena Rybakina.

Result: Iga Swiatek to win in straight sets.
