India advanced to the 2026 Davis Cup qualifiers first round.

India’s dependable ace Sumit Nagal delivered when it mattered once again. Leading from the front, he powered India to a 3-1 win over Switzerland in their Davis Cup 2025 World Group 1 tie that ended a 32-year wait for India’s men’s team to beat a European side in the tournament.

The last time India achieved victory on the European soil was in 1993 against France. With this win India advanced to the Davis Cup qualifiers 2026 first round.

The tie was played in a best-of-five format, featuring four singles matches and one doubles match held over two days, September 12 and 13, at the Swiss Tennis Arena in Biel. Each match was played in a best-of-three tiebreak sets format.

India took a commanding 2-0 lead on the first day of the tie.

In match 1, the world ranked #626 Dhakshineswar Suresh, who made his Davis Cup debut on Friday, upset the higher-ranked Swiss player Jerome Kym (ranked 155th) in straight sets. The thrilling high-stakes match saw the Indian saving multiple break points to win 7-6(4), 6-3.

This win narrowed India’s lead to 2-1 and gave Switzerland a glimmer of hope. However, Nagal had other plans. In match 4, he stepped up once again to secure the decisive victory for India and help the nation qualify for the 2026 Davis Cup qualifiers.
