Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are winless in the clay season this year.

Former ATP doubles No. 1 pair Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will face the Italian pair of Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi in the first round of the Italian Open 2024. The Indo-Aussie duo of Bopanna and Ebden won the 2024 Australian Open after they took down another Italian pair, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, earlier this year.

They continued the winning momentum and exhibited their on-court prowess to triumph at the Miami Open by defeating second-seeded pair Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek. However, Bopanna and Ebden have slipped from the top spot due to their disappointing first round exits at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open.

Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos overtook the Indo-Aussie duo in the ATP rankings, earlier this week. Meanwhile, Matteo Arnaldi will pair with countryman Francesco Passaro to play doubles for the first time in 2024.

Date: May 11th, Saturday

Time: 2:30 PM IST (tentative)

Venue: Foro Italico, Rome

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden vs Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi preview

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have been playing together for a long time. Moreover, the two also have the experience of playing in Grand Slam finals under immense pressure. They reached the final of the US Open last year, eventually losing to Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, who are seeded third in the tournament.

However, despite their experience and coordination, the duo has lacked composure in their recent fixtures. The former World No. 1 pair lost against Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo in their opening fixture at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Moreover, at the 2024 Madrid Open, they lost against Sebastian Korda and Jordan Thompson in the first round.

The Indo-Aussie duo are keen to end their losing streak and Rome is the best possible venue for that because it’s the least major tournament before the 2024 French Open.

Meanwhile, Matteo Arnaldi has played only five doubles matches on the tour, of which he has lost four. In addition, Arnaldi and Passaro are also playing in the singles event. Francesco Passaro defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic and Duje Ajduković in the qualifiers to secure a spot in the main draw, where he will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Prediction

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden have failed to record a victory in their last two matches; however, they’re still one of the strongest pairs on the tour. Moreover, they played powerful tennis on hard courts, but they are yet to settle on the red soil.

Last year, the Indo-Aussie duo got eliminated in the first round of the French Open and clay has been a difficult surface for the two. However, Bopanna did win the 2017 French Open mixed doubles title alongside Gabriela Dabrowski.

On the other side, the Italian pair doesn’t have anything to lose. Francesco Passaro and Matteo Arnaldi will also have crowd support as they will be playing in Rome. Nevertheless, it is an uphill battle for the Italian pair.

Prediction: Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden to win in straight sets.
