Jack Draper became first British man since Andy Murray to reach last four in New York.

The rise of Jack Draper means the British public has not been left waiting too long for a possible successor to Andy Murray’s mantle. Only weeks after Murray hung up his racquet, Draper reminds British tennis fans that the future of UK tennis is in good hands.

The 22-year-old left-hander breezed past 10th seed Alex de Minaur to deny the Aussie his first Grand Slam semi-final with the 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win. Draper dispatched de Minaur in two hours and seven minutes to make his maiden semi-final appearance at the Australian’s expense. It was Draper’s first win over de Minaur across four meetings.

He is the first British player to make the last four at US Open 2024 since 2012 when Andy Murray completed the title run on Arthur Ashe. Murray, a Glasgow native unseated defending champion Novak Djokovic that year to become the first men’s singles winner from the United Kingdom since Fred Perry in 1936.

In June, Draper took over from countryman Cameron Norrie as the new British No. #1 and is not wasting any time following in Murray’s footsteps.

The southpaw from Sutton sent down 42 winners besides converting six breakpoints against the World No. #10 Sydney-sider. Alex de Minaur sent down 32 winners along with an identical number of double faults to tumble out of the US Open and continue his search for Grand Slam success.

Jack Draper will face the winner of the second semi-finals between No. #1 Jannik Sinner and 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final. The Brit will have a shot at a history-making event, where he will look to become only the British major singles champion since Virginia Wade in 1977 and his mentor Andy Murray in 2012.
