Jannik Sinner has become the youngest since Pete Sampras in 1993 to win his maiden tournament as ATP World No. 1.
ATP World No. #1 Jannik Sinner defeated Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-2) to win the 2024 Halle Open on Sunday, June 26. Interestingly, it was Sinner’s first grass final and also his foremost title on the green surface.
After the match, Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz sat together before the trophy ceremony. The two also played in the men’s doubles event together, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by the French pair of Fabian Reboul and Sadio Doumbia.
The current ATP World No. #1 congratulated the Polish tennis star for reaching the final of the 2024 Halle Open. He also lauded Hurkacz for his performance throughout the tournament and affirmed that they are good friends.
He said, “First of all Hubi huge congratulations for playing another final. 2022 you won here. Also to your team, you’re doing an amazing job. We’re very good friends off the court. We played doubles in the beginning of the week. Seeing us play the final here is very special. Thank you so much.”
The Italian tennis star also addressed the finals of the Berlin Ladies Open between Anna Kalinskaya and Jessica Pegula. Kalinskaya lost the match 6-7 (7-0), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) despite having three match points. The Russian tennis player saw two withdrawals on her way to the final: Marketa Vondrousova (R16) and Aryna Sabalenka (QF).
Thus, addressing Anna Kalinskaya’s loss in the final, Jannik Sinner said, “My girlfriend Anna played in Berlin today. She lost, with 6 match points. So I’m very sorry for her. She also had an amazing week.”
