Daniil Medvedev vs Jiri Lehecka preview
Daniil Medvedev, seeded third, commenced his 2024 Madrid Open campaign against Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi. The Russian tennis star lost the first set but rallied to win the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the subsequent round, he encountered Sebastian Korda, who showcased his formidable skills on the court.
Korda delivered an impressive performance with 13 aces and no double faults. The Czech player also notched up 42 winners, surpassing the 2021 US Open champion’s 25. Nevertheless, Medvedev’s composure and precise first serves steered him to a three-set triumph. He then overcame the 17th seed Alexander Bublik in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Jiri Lehecka benefited from a comparatively easier draw in the initial rounds. In the Round of 64, he squared off against Hamad Medjedovic, who has a career-high ranking of 102. Following a straightforward victory over Medjedovic, Lehecka took on Brazil’s number two Thiago Monteiro in the third round.
However, his biggest challenge came in the Round of 16, where he faced the “King of Clay,” Rafael Nadal. Nevertheless, Nadal, who had already played three matches in the last four days, looked tired, eventually losing the match in straight sets.

Prediction
Russian star Daniil Medvedev has looked somewhat vulnerable on the clay courts of the Spanish capital this week, but the world No. 4 should still possess enough pedigree to edge past the rising challenge of Jiri Lehecka in their quarter-final clash.
While Lehecka’s heroic downing of Rafael Nadal sent shockwaves through the Madrid draw, Medvedev’s superior ranking, big-match experience, and impressive recent head-to-head record against the Czech make him a slight favorite.
The numbers, however, reveal a potentially tight encounter in store. Lehecka has been the more dominant player on second serves recently, winning 53.36% of such points compared to Medvedev’s 49.7%. The 21-year-old has also saved a higher percentage of breakpoints (68.18% to 63.21%).
Yet Medvedev’s ability to neutralize big servers, winning 53.69% of opponents’ second-serve points, could disrupt Lehecka’s rhythm. With a 74.32% match-win rate over the past 12 months, the reigning US Open champion’s big game may ultimately prove decisive.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
