Marketa Vondrousova won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women’s singles event.
Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova recently took to social media and gave a health update to her fans.
Last month, the Czech tennis star announced her withdrawal from US Open 2024, having also earlier pulled out from Paris Olympics 2024. She was suffering from a hand injury, which flared after her shocking exit from the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.
Vondrousova entered the grass-court Grand Slam as the defending champion; however, she lost in straight sets to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who had minimal WTA tour experience. With the loss, Vondrousova became the first women’s champion since 1994 to follow up a title with a first-round loss the next year.
She also lost 1990 rankings points, and as a result lost her spot in the top 20 rankings. Meanwhile, 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova later made her way into the ranks to get into the top 10. However, providing a heads-up about her injury, Marketa Vondrousova took to social media and revealed that she had undergone a successful surgical procedure.
She captioned the post on Instagram, “Hey guys. i’ve been struggling with shoulder pain for a few months now and there was no other option but to go for surgery. everything went well and i’ll start rehab soon. see you back on the court happy and healthy.”
The Czech tennis star will commence her rehab for the injury soon. At the age of 25, she has already undergone three major surgeries, which has affected her game on a significant note. Marketa Vondrousova won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women’s singles event.
However, the former World No. 6’s return is still uncertain. She reached the quarterfinals of the US Open last year, where she lost to Madison Keys 6-1, 6-4. The Czech tennis star had a win/loss record of 16/11 this year and hasn’t won a title. However, tennis enthusiasts would be looking forward to watching the 25-year-old play again.
