Nagal became the first Indian player to win a main draw match at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Sumit Nagal’s dream run may have come to an end at the Monte Carlo Masters 2024, but the 26-year-old has every reason to hold his head high after a history-making run at the Principality.

Nagal became the first Indian men’s singles player to win a main draw match in Monte Carlo Masters, capping off a series of stellar results that have seen him soar up the ATP rankings to a career-high 80th.

Though his Monte Carlo Masters odyssey was halted by red-hot Holger Rune in the second round, Nagal departed with no regrets.

“Today didn’t end as I’d hoped, but I am proud of the progress I’ve made this week, winning matches in one of the world’s biggest tournaments,” Nagal reflected. “Thanks a lot for your messages of support over the last few days. I really appreciate it!’, Nagal wrote on X, formerly twitter.

Nagal’s spirited effort saw him grab the second set against the seventh-seeded Rune after dropping the opener. However, the 19-year-old’s thunderous groundstrokes ultimately proved too potent as he prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Nevertheless, 2024 has been a fairy tale story for the 25-year-old. Before his main draw debut in Principality, Nagal already had his name in the history books by becoming the first Indian since 1989 to defeat a seeded player at a Grand Slam when he stunned Alexander Bublik at the Australian Open.

With five ATP Challenger titles already under his belt, including a win at Chennai Open, Nagal’s is showing no signs of slowing, as he builds on this breakthrough campaign.
