Novak Djokovic achieves unique record after qualifying for Miami Open 2025 final

Novak Djokovic will play his first final since the Shanghai Masters last season.
Novak Djokovic will play his first tour-level final in six months at the Miami Open 2025. Djokovic last reached the championship round at the Shanghai ATP 1000 in September last season. In doing so, Djokovic, at 37 years and 301 days, surpasses Roger Federer as the oldest player to make the finals at an ATP Masters 1000 event. Federer was 37 years and 222 days old when he reached the 2019 Miami Open final.
Novak Djokovic, chasing a record seventh title at the Miami Open this year, booked his first title-round appearance at the Masters event since 2016 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grigor Dimitrov. The Serbian is now a win away from his 100th ATP title even as he looks to undo a series of setbacks beginning from last season.

The closest Djokovic has come to a trophy this season was when he made the last four at the Australian Open 2025 but lost to Jannik Sinner. Other records Djokovic sent tumbling this weekend include most Masters Finals (60) and equalling Andre Agassi for most finals (8) since the event’s inaugural run in 1985.
The Serbian is looking to join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the third man to win 100 ATP titles during the Miami Open weekend. By reaching the finals, Djokovic has equaled Federer’s record of 20 consecutive seasons of competing in a tour-level final.
The 37-year-old Djokovic will take on Jakub Mensik in Sunday’s final as he looks to end his title drought. Mensik extinguished Taylor Fritz’s hopes of making the final with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) win to oust the home favourite. The Czech teen unleashed a barrage of 25 aces besides winning 82% of his first serve points.
Football player Lionel Messi turned up to watch the No. 4 seed Djokovic score a 70-minute straight-set win over Dimitrov. Should he win the final on Sunday, Djokovic will move one clear of Andre Agassi’s seven Miami Open titles.

Djokovic will return to the ATP Top Five when the revised rankings come out on Monday. Mensik, the Serbian’s rival in Sunday’s final, will also advance 24 places to a career-high of World No. 30 after his victory over Fritz.
The veteran Serb also joins Federer (122) as only the second player to achieve at least 100 wins at the Sunshine Double. The former World No. 1 notched up his 100th combined win from Indian Wells and the Miami Open after overcoming Dimitrov on Friday evening in Miami.
