Novak Djokovic won his much-awaited Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games.
Novak Djokovic has stated that playing at the ATP Finals is not his priority. Instead, he’s only aiming to play the Grand Slams and represent Serbia.
The Serbian tennis team defeated Greece 3-0 at the Davis Cup World Group 1 on Saturday. In the first tie, Miomir Kecmanovic gave Serbia a 1-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Aristotelis Thanos. Djokovic then made it 2-0 for Serbia in just 45 minutes, with the final scoreline reading 6-0, 6-1 in the 37-year-old’s favour.
After the play, he stated in the press conference that he was not keen to play in the ATP Finals. Currently World No. #4, Djokovic stated that he’s also not chasing a spot in the rankings. The Serb stated that he has completed his career, and he won’t be able to focus other tournaments except the Grand Slams and championships, where he’ll represent Serbia.
Djokovic said, “I am not chasing a place on the ATP list, nor the Final Masters. Those are not my goals, honestly. As for me, I finished my career in other tournaments. I don’t know if I will play them in the future or this year.”
He further added, “My priorities are playing for the national team and Grand Slams; everything else is less important. Now I need a physical, mental, and emotional rest in order to decide what and how to proceed, how much and where,” he added.
In August, Djokovic won his long-awaited Olympic gold in his fifth campaign at the Games. With the triumph, he completed his Career Golden Slam and became the only male tennis player to win four Grand Slams, all nine Masters and singles Olympics gold.
At the US Open earlier this month, he lost to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin in the third round. However, the Serb made a winning return at tennis by stunning Xilas in straight sets. Later on Sunday, Djokovic teamed up with Hamad Medjedović to defeat Aristotelis Thanos and Petros Tsitsipas 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to seal the victory 3-0. Dusan Lajovic and Miomir Kecmanović played the fourth and fifth matches for Serbia, respectively.
After the stellar performance against Greece, the 24-time Grand Slam champion took to social media and uploaded a post, where he thanked his supporters in Belgrade. He wrote, “At home is the most beautiful. Thank you for your support.”
