Tennis: Five male players with the most number of wins
Only four players have managed to record over a thousand wins during their careers.
In November 2020, Rafael Nadal became the fourth player in men’s tennis history to win over a thousand matches in his career. The Spaniard joins a list of legendary figures of the sport who dominated the game in their respective timelines.
The longevity and determination required to win as many tennis singles matches is beyond imagination. This makes the feat all the more impressive. Keeping that in mind, here are the five tennis players that have racked up the most number of wins over their careers:
5. Guillermo Vilas - 951
Guilermo Vilas is hailed as one of the best tennis players to have come from South America. The Argentine won a total of four grand slams and recorded 951 career wins in 1248 matches.
Vilas retired as a professional in 1989 and was later inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1991. Similar to Nadal, he was also an exceptional player on clay and won over 659 games on the surface.
4. Rafael Nadal - 1004
Rafael Nadal became the latest player to breach the 1000-wins mark when he reached the third round of the Rolex Paris Masters by defeating Feliciano Lopez. The Spanish professional is hailed as the most prolific player on clay due to his domination of the French Open, a tournament he has won a record 13 times.
By the end of year, he had racked up 1004 wins in 1208 matches and will definitely add to his tally considering he is still an active player. At 83.1, he has the best winning percentage among the top five players with most wins.
3. Ivan Lendl - 1068
Ivan Lendl is an eight-time grand slam winner who has established himself as one of the best coaches today. He was instrumental in Andy Murray’s success, guiding him to three grand slam titles and an Olympic gold medal.
In his playing career, the Czech international won a total of 1068 matches and had a win percentage of 81.5%. He was most recently coaching Alexander Zverev, but has since separated from the player with mutual consent.
2. Roger Federer - 1242
Roger Federer is second on the list of tennis players with the most number of wins in their career. The Swiss international has over 1242 wins from the 1513 matches he has played. He has won 20 grand slam titles, a record that he now shares with his rival and friend, Nadal.
Federer is often pegged as the best player to have ever graced the sport due to his captivating style of play. He has also won a total of 103 ATP singles titles and is only the second active player on the list alongside the Spaniard.
1. Jimmy Connors - 1274
There have been a lot of great players from the US like Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, but the undisputed greatest to have come from the country is Jimmy Connors. He holds the record for most singles victories, having won 1274 out of 1557 games.
Among the many individual accolades Connors has won in his career, including 17 grand slam titles, he still holds the record for most number of wins, most number of games played and most number of singles titles with 109 victories.
