Zverev, Tsitsipas reach French Open third round, Sharan crashes out

Novak Djokovic also reached the next stage after defeating Tennys Sandgren.

World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the third round of the French Open, after seeing off Spaniard Pedro Martinez. Tsitsipas was in total control for the entirety of the contest, recording a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, who harbours the hope of winning his maiden Grand Slam title at this year's Roland Garros, will have to navigate his way past American John Isner in the next round.

On the other hand, World No. 6 Alexander Zverev had to win two nerve-wracking tiebreaks to make it through to the third round. Zverev produced 10 double faults against a stubborn Roman Safiullin of Russia. But ultimately, he composed himself to get through.

The German has never reached beyond the quarterfinals stage at the Roland Garros. In order to do so, he will have to find consistency sooner rather than later. Zverev will have the chance of exactly doing so when comes up against Serb Laslo Djere in his next match.

Indians fail to make an impact

India's Divij Sharan and his partner Federico Delbonis of Argentina were knocked out in the first round of the Men's Doubles event. The Indo-Argentine combination was eliminated by Australian duo Matt Reid and Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-7, 4-6 in the first round.

Another Indian representative Ankita Raina also failed to make it past the first round. Raina and her American partner Lauren Davis suffered elimination at the hands of the German-Czech duo of Laura Siegemund and Lucie Hradecka in the women's doubles category. They exited after a 4-6, 4-6 defeat in straight sets.

Djokovic starts with a straight-sets victory

Novak Djokovic followed Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in storming into the French Open second round. Djokovic won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 against American Tennys Sandgren. It was the first-ever Roland Garros men's match which took place in the night session. With no spectators allowed due to the 9 pm local curfew in Paris, the Serbian superstar dispatched his opponent effortlessly.

The 2016 champion is hoping to replicate his heroics and claim his second-ever title at the French Open. Djokovic, who currently has 18 Grand Slam titles to his name, is looking to cut the gap to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who sit pretty at the top. His next round opponent will be Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas.

Gauff, Azarenka off to comfortable starts

Elsewhere, the dark horse in the women's singles this year, American Cori Gauff, secured her progression to the second round. She defeated Alexandra Krunic of Serbia 7-6, 6-4 to reach the next stage. Gauff will come up against China's Wang Qiang in the second round. Interestingly, the two had met last month in a clay clash at the final of the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma. On that occasion, the American had finished off the contest in just 74 minutes by winning with a margin of 6-1, 6-3 to clinch her second WTA title.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Viktoria Azarenka also booked her place in the second round of the French Open. The vastly experienced campaigner saw off Danish teenager Clara Tauson 7-5, 6-4 to move forward. The Belarusian's next challenge will come in the form of American Madison Keys.
