Tennis: Top five biggest wins of Novak Djokovic career

The 33-year-old has registered some exciting wins in his glorious career.

Novak Djokovic has engraved his name in the history books as one of the greatest players in tennis history. The Serbian superstar is currently ranked World No. 1 and is a career grand slam winner.

He has a total of 18 Grand Slam titles and has also held his top ranking in tennis for a record of 312 weeks. Moreover, Djokovic is the only male player in the world to win all nine Masters 1000 tournaments, and has won each at least twice. His career is marked with many great moments, accomplishments and astounding matches.

Let us take a look at some of the biggest wins of the his career:

5. Novak Djokovic Vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Australian Open Final 2008)

Djokovic's first Grand Slam career win came in his patented Australian Open. He has won this particular tournament a record nine times. In 2008, he had made his way into the final without dropping a single set in the tournament. His last win had come over another tennis legend and the then No. 1 Roger Federer.

The Serbian had made quick work of Federer and dispatched him in straight sets to make his way into his first Grand Slam final. At the other end stood unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who also had dismissed Spanish star Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the semi-finals. Both men were hungry to have their first chance at Grand Slam glory and people were expecting a classic.

Tsonga landed the first blow, taking the first set 6-4, but it was all Djokovic later on. Novak won the following three sets with the last going to a tiebreaker. He won the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to clinch the title.

4. Novak Djokovic Vs Taylor Fritz (Australian Open third round 2021)

The match between Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz is a special mention for the sheer tenacity displayed by the Serbian. He had won the first two sets by 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, but had to take a medical timeout in the third. Fritz came back and won the third and fourth sets to level the match at 2-2.

However, Djokovic came back strong and wrapped up the final set in brilliant fashion with a 6-2 finish. The three-hour marathon showed Djokovic's true grit as a player. He did not allow the adversity to get to him and showed his mettle as a true winner.

3. Novak Djokovic Vs Roger Federer (Wimbledon Final 2014)

The clash between two of the biggest names in sports history was nothing short of a classic. Moreover, when you are playing in the hallowed grounds of Wimbledon the stakes are comparatively higher. The two giants collided in a three hour fifty-six minute thriller. The Serb won the match  6–7 (7-9), 6–4, 7–6 (7-4), 5–7, 6–4 to grab his second Wimbledon title.

The match had its wonderful moments, as both players broke each other's serves many times and wren't giving an inch to the opposition. Infact, the first set of this match lasted as long as the women's final played the day before. It was also the first time the Wimbledon Men's showpiece had gone into the fifth set since 2009.

The majority of rallies played in this match went over 20 shots. The game was very fast-paced and Djokovic made zero errors for nearly 30 minutes in the third set. After the match, Djokovic even said, "This has been the best quality Grand Slam final that I have been part of. It's the most special Grand Slam that I have played".

2. Novak Djokovic Vs Andy Murray ( French Open Final 2016)

Novak Djokovic's one and only French Open title win came in the year 2016 after he defeated Andy Murray at Roland Garros. Winning the French Open completed a career Grand Slam for the Serbian ace. It also made him the first man since Rod Laver to hold all four major titles at the same time.

The start however did not go as planned, as he lost the first set. However, he bounced back strongly and did not lend the Briton any opportunity from then on. He won all the remaining sets in devastating fashion to win the match 3–6, 6–1, 6–2, 6–4. Djokovic hit 41 winners in the game.

The second set was the turning point of the match, as Djokovic broke serve twice in a row and eventually won the set. He was so aggressive throughout the match that Murray had no answer and it ended up being a comfortable win for the Serb in the end.

1. Novak Djokovic Vs Roger Federer ( Wimbledon Final 2019)

Another Wimbledon final, another Djokovic and Federer clash and another masterclass. Every tennis lover had high expectations knowing how their last final clash at Wimbledon went and this time around it more than lived up to it. The near five-hour marathon played between the two is the longest singles final in Wimbledon history. Djokovic showed true determination and resilience, as he came back from being two championship points down to win the title by 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 13-12 (7-3).

The game saw the two greats trying to outdo each other in every way. Despite Federer outplaying Djokovic in terms of statistics, it was the latter who came out victorious. Federer had more aces, hit more winners, had a better first and second serve percentage than the Serbian. Additionally, Federer also had fewer double faults and more breaks points.

On the other hand, Djokovic won all the tiebreaks and had lesser unforced errors. This match also became memorable as it introduced the final set tie-break for the very first time. The rule was agreed that as soon as the players reach 12-12 in the fifth set a tiebreaker would be played. Djokovic won the final tiebreak 7-3, thus bringing an end to a memorable match in tennis history.
