Watch: Roger Federer, actor Mads Mikkelsen promote Switzerland's autumn in new tourism campaign

A second celebrity collaboration for Roger Federer in the world of advertising.

In a wonderfully shot video for Switzerland Tourism, Roger Federer and Mads Mikkelsen are the latest recruits to promote tourism in the landlocked country in Autumn. The commercial begins with Federer and the crew waiting for Mikkelsen. Only, he decides to take his time while looking to get in the element.

Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen dives into a Swiss mountain lake, hugs trees and a cow, all in the name of getting into the ‘mood’ before shooting the commercial. When Mikkelsen turns up, it’s Roger’s turn to wander off, and now the Danish actor goes in search of his co-star. Ultimately, expecting the shoot to go ahead is an exercise in futility as both the stars show no sign of returning.

The latest ad film ropes in Mikkelsen for the fourth part of a series, moving on from Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Trevor Noah.

Federer, a Swiss native, also one of the world’s most popular sportspersons, was last spotted during the US Open 2024 fortnight as a fan. The commercial for Swiss tourism is not the former tennis player’s only outing with a celebrity this year.

The ad for the Roger Federer-backed sportswear brand ‘On’ saw the 20-time Grand Slam winner go head-to-head with actress Zendaya in a comical game of air tennis. The ‘Challenger’ star invites Roger to a face-off in a store selling ‘On’ merchandise.

In a scene reminiscent of the movie, she lowers her sunglasses to stare down the tennis legend before passing a note which reads, ‘Me & You, Air Tennis, 3 PM.’  The match is kicked off by Darnell Appling, who plays the umpire in the film by announcing, ‘Zendaya to serve. Play.’

Zendaya and Federer crossing paths for a game of tennis makes for an iconic campaign. Published on the sportswear brand’s official YouTube channel, the 1:10 clip has accumulated 1.1 million views in the two months since it went live. 

Meanwhile, Mikkelsen has aside from the role of ‘Le Chiffre’ in the 2006 movie Casino Royal, also played a significant role in the popular Star Wars franchise, appearing in the 2016 release Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. 

Mikkelsen is also part of the Marvel cinematic universe, taking on the antagonist’s role in Doctor Strange, which also saw a 2016 release. The Dane, known for his intense roles, is also active in Danish cinema and is a former gymnast.
