Sumit Nagal will play his first match since the Paris Olympics.
India’s Sumit Nagal will face the United States’ Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the qualification draw of the 2024 Cincinnati Masters on Sunday, August 11.
Sumit Nagal, who became the talk of the town after he defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the first round of the 2024 Australian Open in straight sets, has given multiple commendable performances on the tour this year.
However, on most occasions, the 26-year-old has failed to record the wins despite a nip-and-tuck contest. At the Monte Carlo Masters, he won a set against former ATP World No. #4 Holger Rune. In addition to that, he also earned a main draw entry at Roland Garros and the Wimbledon Championships, becoming the first Indian since 2019 to do so.
Nagal also won the Heilbronn Challenger. However, he failed to reach the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indian tennis star faced home hope Corentin Moutet in the opening round of the Paris Olympics. Moutet easily won the first set 6-2; however, Nagal returned to win the second set with an identical scoreline.
In the decider, the Indian tennis star was leading 4-5. However, Corentin Moutet saved his serve and sealed the match, while Nagal tried to force it into a tiebreak. After the 2024 Olympics, Nagal will be in action for the first time on the tour as the 12th seed.

Apart from the 26-year-old, the likes of Nuno Borges, Pedro Martinez, Corentin Moutet, Dusan Lajovic and more are also in the qualifying round for the 2024 Cincinnati Masters. If Nagal wins, he will face either fifth seed Alex Michelsen or Zizou Bergs in the Qualifying competition.
The defending champion at Cincinnati, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament. Meanwhile, Australia’s Alex de Minaur will miss the competition due to a hip injury he suffered during the 2024 Wimbledon Championships in the fourth round against Arthur Fils.
Meanwhile, the Indo-Aussie pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are seeded second the ATP 1000 Masters event. They will face either Arther Fils/Nicolás Jarry or Sander Gillé/Joran Vliegen in the final second round of the main draw.
