Top five Indian men's singles tennis players in 2022

These athletes have the capabilities to win big tournaments.

Singles tennis has never been too kind for the Indians. Though the nation has found great success in doubles and mixed doubles, glory in the individual format of the game has been very much elusive. India is yet to produce a singles Grand Slam winner even after all these years.

Only a handful of players have ever broken into the to top 100 of the ATP rankings. But there are some men's singles players in the Indian tennis circuit today that have the potential to do so.

Here are the top five men's singles players on the Indian circuit in 2022.

5.Sidharth Rawat

New Delhi lad Sidharth Rawat is currently ranked 496 in the ATP world rankings. Rawat has accumulated 68 ranking points already. points and will look to make it into the top 200 in the coming years. The 28-year-old has a 76% win rate this year, a significant increase from 44% last year .

Rawat, who loves to play on the hard court, has started the year in a dominant fashion. He has won 16 of his 21 matches this year and will look to keep the form going for the rest of 2022. He has also represented India in the doubles category.

4.Mukund Sasikumar

Mukund Sasikumar made his ATP main draw debut as a wild-card at the 2020 Maharashtra Open. Mukund achieved his career high ATP ranking of 229 in October 2019. However things have taken a turn since then.

Sasikumar's ATP ranking dropped to 321 in late August last year. Currently he is ranked 408 in the world.The man from Chennai is currently on a three-match losing streak. His last loss came at Citta de Forli in Italy at the hands of Luca Nardi in straight sets. However, Sasikumar has the potential to come out of this slump in form soon enough.

3.Prajnesh Gunneswaran

Prajnesh Gunneswaran is the only one on this list who has been on the top 100 in the ATP rankings. Moreover he has also played in the main draw of four major Grand Slams. In addition to this Gunneswaran has also won a bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

He has won two ATP Challenger titles and eight ITF singles titles. The lanky Indian came through the qualifying of the 2019 BNP Paribas Open and defeated Benoit Paire in straight sets. The win got him into the second round of the competition. In the second round he scored a major upset over then 17th seed Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili .He also had a decent run in the Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open.

2.Sumit Nagal

Sumit Nagal is one of the big rising prospects in Indian tennis. The 24-year-old is currently ranked 259th in the ATP rankings with 196 ranking points.

Despite making an early mark as a doubles player in the Wimbledon Juniors in 2015 he has transitioned into a very successful singles player. Sumit's seven year long professional career has seen him accumulate multiple achievements. He has won medals at the ITF Future Tours, ATP Challengers, Asian Games and Davis Cup.

The most notable among them however was his performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He became the first Indian player in 25 years to reach the second round of an Olympic event. Nagal won the game courtesy of a victory over Denis Istomin in three sets (6-4,6-7,6-4).

1.Ramkumar Ramnathan

Ramantathan is currently ranked 179 on the ATP circuit and trains under Juan Balcells in the Sanchez Casal Academy in Barcelona.

The tennis star broke into the scene reached the quarter finals of the Chennai Open 2016 .He picked up victories over the likes of Somdev Devvarman, Gimeno Traver and Alexander Kudryavtsev in the same event. He played the final of the Tallahassee challenger. He also qualified for the Masters 1000 tournament at Cincinnati Masters.

Ramnathan also holds a memorable win over then World No.8 Dominic Thiem. The 2017 Antalya Open saw Ramkumar dismantling Thiem in straight sets (6-3,6-2). Ranked 222nd at the time, Ramkumar Ramanathan reached the qua that year.
