US Open 2022: Kyrgios leaves World No.1 Medvedev bemused

There will be a new champion in the Men’s Singles category at the Grand Slam.

The 2022 US Open is delivering entertainment every day with exciting matches taking place across multiple categories. Day eight saw one of the biggest clashes of the Grand Slam’s current edition as the top seed and defending champion in Men’s Singles, Daniil Medvedev, came up against Nick Kyrgios, who is having a brilliant year himself.

Despite being the underdog, Nick Kyrgios beat Daniil Medvedev by 7-6(13-11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance into the quarter-final. This means there will be a new champion in this category as well, similar to the Women’s Singles. Speaking of which, Ons Jabeur was again too good for her opponent Veronika Kudermetova and beat her by a 7-6(7-1), 6-4 score to make her way into the quarter-final. The player from Tunisia is one of the favourites for the title.

There were several other exciting contests on an eventful day in the 2022 US Open. On that note, here is a round-up of key results from the Grand Slam taking place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City:

Men’s Singles

The fifth seed Casper Ruud recorded an impressive win to move into the next round. He was up against Corentin Moutet of France and the Norwegian beat him by a 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4-7), 6-2 score.

Matteo Berrettini of Italy took five sets to defeat his opponent from Spain to reach the quarters. The Italian came out on top against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina thanks to a 3-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win in three hours and 46 minutes.

Women’s Singles

Coco Gauff of the United States of America did not let the spectators down and won by 7-5, 7-5 against China’s Zhang Shuai. The 18-year-old is inching closer to her first-ever Grand Slam title. Caroline Garcia of France will be her opponent in the next round who was a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 winner in her Round four contest against America’s Alison Riske-Amritraj.

Men’s Doubles

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury look set to defend their title if their Round 4 performance is an indication. The top-seeded pair dismantled Italians Simone Bolleli and Fabio Fognini by 6-1, 7-5 to move into the quarter-finals.

Women’s Doubles

Third seeds and strong favourites for the title, Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shuko Aoyama of Japan and Angel Chan of Chinese Taipei. They also move into the quarters after a dominating performance.

Mixed Doubles

Top seeds Desirae Krawczyk of the USA and Neil Skupski of the UK were eliminated in Round 2. They were defeated by the American pair of Catherine McNally and William Blumberg by 2-6, 4-6 as the winners make their way into the quarter-final.
