US Open 2022: Nadal advances, Williams sisters crash out

The year-ending Grand Slam continues to showcase sensational matches for the spectators.
The 2022 US Open had a lot in store for its fans all over the globe on Day 4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Rafael Nadal came from a set down to knock out Fabio Fognini, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 to enter the next round. He is showing brilliance, and the competition must be wary of the threat the Spaniard brings. Nadal overcame a racquet injury that he suffered in the fourth set.
The third seed in men’s singles Carlos Alcaraz was also in action. The Spaniard was up against Federico Coria of Argentina and got the better of him thanks to a 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 score. Iga Swiatek, the top seed in Women’s Singles was also one of the high-profile players playing on the day. She was in a class of her own following a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 win over America’s Sloane Stephens.
There were a lot of exciting matches to keep a track of in multiple categories. Here is a roundup of the results from Day 4 of the 2022 US Open in New York:
Men’s Singles
Cameron Norrie of the United Kingdom was in cruise control as he beat Joao Sousa of Portugal by 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 in straight sets to advance in the tournament. Jannik Sinner, the 11th seed knocked out America’s Christopher Eubanks by 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 to set up a meeting with another American Brandon Nakashima in the next round.
Marin Cilic was also amongst the winners on the day as he sailed past Albert Ramos Viñolas of Spain by 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to set up a clash with Daniel Evans of the UK in Round 3. Richard Gasquet also emerged as the winner against Miomir Kecmanović by 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. However, he will face a confident Nadal in the next outing.
Women’s Singles
The highest ranked American in the Women’s Singles, Jessica Pegula won her Round 2 contest against Aliaksandra Sasnovich by a 6-4, 6-4 score. Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza took an hour and 11 minutes to defeat Linda Fruhvirtová by 6-0, 6-4 to advance into Round 3 where she will meet Petra Kvitova.
Alize Cornet, who eliminated reigning champion Emma Raducanu in the first round, continued her winning form. The Frenchwoman beat Katerina Siniaková of the Czech Republic by 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. Fourth seed Paula Badosa was another second-round notable elimination. She lost by 7-5(7-5), 1-6, 2-6 against Petra Martic of Croatia.
Men’s Doubles
India’s Rohan Bopanna and his partner Matwé Middelkoop were at the receiving end of a first-round elimination. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego and Andrea Vavassori beat them by a 7-6(7-2), 6-2 score.
Women’s Doubles
Serena Williams and Venus Williams were eliminated in the first round by Lucie Hradecká and Linda Nosková. The pair from the Czech Republic won the contest by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 score to knock out the America fan favourites.
Mixed Doubles
It was a day to forget for Rohan Bopanna as he lost the first round fixture in the Mixed Double category as well. He and his partner Zhaoxuan Yang of China lost to Gabriella Dabrowski of Canada and Max Purcell of Australia by a 5-7, 5-7 score.
