Iga Swiatek won the US Open in 2022 after defeating Ons Jabeur in the final.
The draw for the 2024 US Open has been announced, and several top players have learned about their fates at the last Grand Slam of the year. The WTA World No. #1 Iga Swiatek will commence her campaign against a qualifier, and her draw gets relatively tougher with every single match.
Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at 2022 US Open champion Iga Swiatek’s projected path to the final:
First Round: Qualifier
Iga Swiatek will face a qualifier in the first round. Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Marina Bassols Ribera, Priscilla Hon, Destanee Aiava, and more have qualified for the main draw.
Second Round: Daria Saville
Iga Swiatek can face Australia’s Daria Saville in the second round of US Open 2024. Saville is a former World No #20 and has reached the second round at Flushing Meadows on three different occasions. The two have faced each other twice on the tour, with Swiatek winning on both occasions. Interestingly, they faced each other in the second round of the US Open too last year.
Third Round: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
The 2022 champion can go head-to-head against Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round. Pavlyuchenkova also reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati last week. However, her last successful outing at a Grand Slam came at the 2020 Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals.
The 33-year-old has faced Swiatek only once on the tour, and their only meeting took place at the 2023 Italian Open, where Pavlyuchenkova lost 6-0, 6-0.
Fourth Round: Mirra Andreeva or Liudmila Samsonova
Mirra Andreeva and Liudmila Samsonova are drawn in the lower half of the first section. Andreeva will commence her campaign against Columbia’s Camila Osorio, while Samsonova will face China’s Wang Qiang. Samsonova can also face Marie Bouzkova in the second round, while Andreeva is expected to cruise into the third round.
Iga Swiatek faced Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Cincinnati Open, where the Russian prodigy had a decent performance. She also garnered praise from Swiatek for her performance in the three-setter.
Meanwhile, Samsonova is yet to win a match against Swiatek in their three meetings. Additionally, their last two meetings: 6-2, 6-2 in 2023 Beijing and 6-1, 6-0 in the same year Dubai, had been heavily dominated by the Pole.
Quarterfinals: Danielle Collins or Jessica Pegula
Iga Swiatek can face 11th seed Danielle Collins or 2024 Canadian Open champion Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. Both tennis players will commence their campaign against a compatriot. Interestingly, Pegula will face either Emma Raducanu or Sofia Kenin in the second round while Katie Boulter could await her in the third.
Meanwhile, Collins will face Anna Karolína Schmiedlová or Diana Shnaider in the third round before facing Pegula. Swiatek has faced Pegula nine times on the tour, winning six times. On the other side, she will face Collins for the first time in her professional career.
Semifinals: Elena Rybakina or Jasmine Paolini
Despite being the fifth seed, Jasmine Paolini is still an underdog to reach the semifinals at US Open 2024. She will start her campaign against 2019 Champion Bianca Andreescu and later fight the odds of Jelena Ostapenko, Yulia Putintseva, and Leylah Fernandez to reach the quarterfinals. In the last eight, she might be up against Elena Rybakina or Anna Kalinskaya.
Meanwhile, Rybakina can make her way to the fourth round swiftly, but her recent loss to Leylah Fernandez in the second round in Cincinnati was concerning. Elena Rybakina is among the very few players who lead Swiatek in the head-to-head record, 4-2. Meanwhile, Paolini has never won a match against the Pole in their three meetings.
Final: Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff or Qinwen Zheng
Aryna Sabalenka is the likely candidate to reach the final of the 2024 US Open because of her recent triumph in Cincinnati. She also defeated Iga Swiatek in straight sets on her way to the final. Additionally, she didn’t lose a single set throughout the campaign. Having faced Swiatek 12 times, Sabalenka has been on the winning side on four occasions.
Looking at her recent form, defending champion Coco Gauff is expected to face trouble reaching the final at Flushing Meadows. Seeded third, she could face Elina Svitolina, Emma Navarro, and Marta Kostyuk on her way to the last eight. In the quarterfinals, her potential opponents can be Paula Badosa, Barbora Krejcikova, or Maria Sakkari. She trails Swiatek in the head-to-head record by 11-1.
The 2024 Paris Olympics women’s singles gold medalist, Qinwen Zheng, defeated Iga Swiatek on her favourite surface and arguably her preferred venue. With elevated confidence, the 2024 Australian Open runner-up has joined the race of favorites. However, she has defeated Swiatek only once in their seven meetings.
