Watch: Roger Federer visits US Open; Frances Tiafoe, Aryna Sablenka reacts
Roger Federer was back at the US Open 2024 as a spectator.
The US Open 2024 saw Frances Tiafoe and Aryna Sabalenka register comfortable wins on their way to the semifinals. Both players admitted to being a bit of under pressure as five-time US Open champion and tennis legend Roger Federer was in the stands watching them play. Tiafoe and Sabalenka were in admiration of the Swiss maestro. Tiafoe stated that Federer always carries his charisma wherever he goes.
He said, ’The way he looked in the suite was the same way he looked when he was playing. No sweating. T shirts ironed perfect; hair perfect.’ The American player added that Federer was an icon and a legend in the sport. Tiafoe had played against Federer in the first round of US Open in 2017 and lost in five sets. He also had spent time with Federer during the Laver Cup.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka had a much humorous take on Federer’s presence in the stands during her match. She said, ‘I saw him there, saw him on the big screen, I’m pretty sure he came to watch Tiafoe and Dimitrov. I was like ok, I have to play my best tennis, so he enjoys it. I have to show my skills, you know, slice skills, come to the net and all that stuff.’ The world No #2 said it was nice to see Federer at US Open 2024.
Federer’s presence might have motivated Sabalenka to record her best win yet in US Open 2024. She only dropped three games in the quarter-final against Qinwen Zheng.
