Sumit Nagal will be making his third main draw appearance at US Open 2024.

Sumit Nagal came into the public eye in January when he became the first Indian man to defeat a seeded player in the singles draw of a grand slam for 35 years. Nagal made his way into the Top 100 in February this year and reached the main draw of the Monte-Carlo Masters in April. Once there, he scored an upset win over Matteo Arnaldi before falling to then World No. #7 Holger Rune.

The Indian continued his rise in the ATP Rankings to a high of World No. #80 after the Monte-Carlo Masters, followed by a career-best of No. #71 in June. After making early exits at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and Cincinnati, Nagal finds himself at No. #74 in the ATP Rankings.

Tallon Griekspoor, the top ranked Dutch player, previously reached a career-high ranking of No. 21 in November 2023. He has two ATP tour titles both in 2023 at Pune, India and ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. Currently ranked No. #40 in the world, Griekspoor broke into the top 100 in October 2021.

Despite his lack of titles in 2024, Griekspoor has defeated two top 15 players this season. The first of them was Hubert Hurkacz (8) in Rotterdam and Holger Rune (12) in Madrid.  The Dutchman also stretched Alexander Zverev to five set in the third round at Roland Garros this year before finally succumbing to the German.

Sumit Nagal vs Tallon Griekspoor preview

Slotted in the bottom half of the draw at US Open 2024, the unseeded duo of Nagal and Griekspoor face a challenging draw even before the business end of the tournament. A possible face-off with 21st seed Sebastian Baez awaits in the second-round followed by ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the third round and sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth-round.

The journeymen have their hands full as they seek to make an impression and shed the tag of only making up the numbers. Should either player make the last eight, they could go up against defending champion Novak Djokovic or the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinalist and second-highest ranked American at World No. 13, Ben Shelton.

Where and how to watch live streaming and TV broadcast of Sumit Nagal vs Tallon Griekspoor, US Open 2024, first round match in India?

Prediction

The presence of Nagal and Griekspoor in New York follows a similar trajectory. Neither player has made it past the second round at Flushing Meadows. Their win-loss record at the venue stands at 1-2 for Nagal and 1-3 for Griekspoor. The slight deficit for the Dutch notwithstanding, he has a better overall record on hard courts at 10-9 to Nagal’s 1-4.

Griekspoor has also gone further than Nagal at the other hard-court Grand Slam, the Australian Open by reaching the quarter-finals in 2022. Nagal’s best in Melbourne is his third-round appearance this season.

Further tilting the odds in the Dutchman’s favour is his 2024 win-loss record of 22-20 compared to 15-31 by Nagal. The Indian has had his chances this season, but failed to go the extra mile when the situation demanded it.

Result: Tallon Griekspoor to win in four sets.
