Wimbledon Day 6: Roger Federer advance to last 16, Sania Mirza crashes out

2021 Roland Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was knocked out of the tournament by Karolina Muchova earlier on the day.

Eight-time champion Roger Federer advanced to the Round of 16 of the Wimbledon, as he beat British No. 2 Cameron Norrie on Saturday. Federer's experience overwhelmed the Brit, as he prevailed 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 at the All England Club's Centre Court.

Roger Federer was serving for the first set and clinched it with minimum effort. He received very little resistance in the following set, followed by Norrie winning the third under pressure. Norrie showed grit from there on, but Federer composed himself and went on to progress into the Round of 16.

Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who won in straight-set against Aussie James Duckworth earlier of Saturday, will be facing Federer in his upcoming game at the Round of 16.

Sania Mirza bows out in women's doubles

Indian tennis superstar Sania Mirza and her doubles partner, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, were knocked out in the women's doubles category. The Indo-American duo lost in straight sets to Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova on Saturday.

In the first set, Mirza and Mattek-Sands put up a tough fight against the Russian duo. In the second, a couple of false shots saw them trailing and throwing away the chance to take the match into a decider. Ultimately, Mirza and Mattek-Sands lost 4-6, 3-6 to the Russians.

Meanwhile, Sania Mirza registered an easy win in the second round of mixed doubles category with her partner Rohan Bopanna. The Indian duo defetaed Great Britain's Aidan McHugh and Emily Webley-Smith in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round.

India's Divij Sharan crashed out of the Wimbledon 2021 after facing defeat in the second round. Raven Klassen and Darija Jurak beat Divij and Samantha Murray Sharan 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 to go through the next round.

Teenagers impress

British teenage wildcard sensation Emma Raducanu scripted one of the most remarkable stories of Wimbledon. The 18-year-old dropped to the court in disbelief after outclassing world no. 45 Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 7-5.

The World No. 338, who appeared in her school-leaving exams recently, is making her Grand Slam debut in the ongoing Wimbledon. After her win on Saturday, she became the youngest British woman to reach the Wimbledon Round of 16 in the Open Era.

Another teenager, whose stock continues to rise is American Coco Gauff. The 17-year-old was at her brilliant best in ousting Slovenia's Kaja Juvan 6-3, 6-3 in just over an hour. She has now qualified for at least the fourth round in four of her previous eight Grand Slam main draws she has contested, including her first major quarterfinal at Roland Garros 2021.

2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber now stands between her and a quarterfinal spot.

Pavlyuchenkova, Ostapenko shown the exit door

2021 Roland Garros runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko will play no further part in the ongoing Wimbledon. Pavlyuchenkova was comfortably beaten 5-7, 3-6 by Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova earlier on Saturday.

On the other hand, Ostapenko won the first set before a medical timeout stalled her momentum. A war of words took place with her opponent Ajla Tomljanovic, who accused her of feigning injury. Eventually, the Latvian was sent packing after a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 defeat.
