Two women's singles semi-finals are taking place on Thursday.
Top seed and 2019 French Open winner Ashleigh Barty has reached her second Grand Slam final ever at Wimbledon 2021. She defeated seasoned tennis star Angelique Kerber 6-3, 7-6 in the semi-finals on Thursday.
The Australian had seen defeated French Open winner Krejcikova in the round of 16. She then proceeded to beat her fellow countrywoman Alja Tomljanovic in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Barty's German opponent was a three-time Grand Slam winner and had won Wimbledon in 2018. Barty used the full extent of her skills against the 25th seed player. Angelique Kerber had beaten American Coco Gauff in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16 before dealing with Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals. Her quarterfinal victory was as dominant as Barty’s, fending off her Czech opponent’s challenge in straight sets.
On the other side of the draw, Belorussian tennis phenom Aryna Sabalenka will be looking to make it to her first ever Grand Slam final by beating the eighth seed Karolina Pliskova. Aryna Sabalenka, who is the second seed, had a tough Round of 16 match against Elena Rybakina. The three set affair ended 6-3,4-6,6-3 in favour of Sabalenka. Later, she defeatd Turk Ons Jabeur in straight sets in the quarterfinals to shake off any doubts regarding her claim.
Pliskova had two straight set routine affairs against unseeded oppositions to reach the semi-finals. She beat Russian Ludmilla Samsonova 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16. She beat Swiss star Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-2 in the next game. The 29-year old is looking to make her second Grand Slam final after previously losing in the 2016 US Open at the last stage.
