This victory marked the sixth grass court Grand Slam title for the Serbian star.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic continued his relentless run by emerging victorious in Wimbledon 2021. He defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in a hard-fought final.

After a dreadfully nervous start, Berrettini won the first set following a tie-breaker. Although Novak Djokovic seemed like the superior player and had set points, he could not convert it to a win. However, a serve out wide followed by a clean-up backhand provoked a poor backhand from Berrettini to give the Serbian the second set.

Novak Djokovic winning a Grand Slam final after recovering from a set down has been a familiar sight in recent years and the Wimbledon was not different from it. Berrettini swiped a forehand wide after a long rally. He committed three crucial errors in the final game of the third set, which was enough for the Serbian to pounce upon.

The 34-year-old was looking in complete control of the contest. He underlined his superiority in the fourth set despite the best efforts of the Italian. In doing so, Novak Djokovic became the fourth male Tennis player to win a third successive Wimbledon title, after Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer.

More importantly, this is his 20th career Grand Slam title, moving level at the top with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The Serbian will now focus on claiming an elusive gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, with the quadrennial event less than a fortnight away.

Indian-origin Banerjee clinches boys' singles title

Elsewhere, Indian-origin Samir Banerjee was crowned the Wimbledon boys' singles champion on Sunday. The 17-year-old was competing in only his second junior Grand Slam. He won in straight-set 7-5, 6-3 against Victor Lilov. The match lasted for just one hour and 22 minutes.

Ramanathan Krishnan was the first Indian to win a junior major when he won the 1954 Junior Wimbledon championships. Whereas, Yuki Bhambri was the last Indian to win a junior Grand Slam singles title when he triumphed at the Australian Open in 2009.
