Novak Djokovic beats Nick Kyrgios, wins Men's Singles Wimbledon 2022

This is the 21st Grand Slam win for the Serbian.

The 2022 edition of the Wimbledon Championships came to a fabulous conclusion on Sunday. Novak Djokovic defeated Nick Kyrgios in Men’s Singles final to win his seventh Wimbledon singles title. This was the Serbian’s fourth-consecutive win at the All England Club, further tightening his grip on one of the most prestigious Grand Slams on tour. 

The spectators inside the Centre Court were treated to mesmerising tennis action by both the finalists. Novak Djokovic’s silky-smooth gameplay came up against Nick Kyrgios’ unpredictability. The match took three hours and one minute to end, which saw Djokovic emerge as the winner by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(7-3) score. With the seventh triumph at Wimbledon, the 35-year-old ties Pete Sampras in second place and is second only to Roger Federer, who has eight titles. 

Praise From A Champion

Novak Djokovic showed exemplary sportsmanship after the final. Nick Kyrgios raced into a first-set lead but lost his way afterwards. However, he got words of praise from the 21-time Grand Slam winner in the post-match interview. “Nick, you’ll be back. Not just in Wimbledon but in many finals. You showed why you are one of the best players in the world. Congrats to you and your team. I wish you all the best, man. I really think you are an amazing talent," the top seed in Men’s Singles said.

The 35-year-old further said, “Hopefully, this is the start of a wonderful friendship.” Despite their peculiar personalities away from the court, the finalists were very respectful of each other in the ultimate clash.

So Close, Yet So Far

As for the Aussie, it was a first-ever Grand Slam appearance. One would say he was already a winner in his own respect. Nick Kyrgios made it to the final by showcasing incredible tennis and a bit of fortune with Rafael Nadal withdrawing due to injury in the semi-final of Wimbledon. “Yeah he is a bit of a god, I’m not going to lie,” Kyrgios said while talking about his opponent in the post-match interview. 

He further went on to add, “I thought I played well. First of all congratulations to Novak and your team, you’ve won this championship so many times I don’t even know anymore.” 

Women’s Doubles

The final of the Women’s Doubles also took place on Sunday. Top seeds Elise Mertens of Belgium and Shuai Zhang of China were up against the second-seeded pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. While many spectators were gearing up for an electric contest between the two best teams, it was not the case.

The second seeds won the championship by defeating the top seeds in straight sets. In the end, the Czechs won the game by 6-2, 6-4 in a little over an hour.
