Andy Murray is also a part of Great Britain’s tennis team for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has withdrawn from the men’s singles event at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.

Last month, the 37-year-old announced that he would retire at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships or the Paris Olympics. He’s a two-time Wimbledon champion and a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Murray is the only British tennis player to win the grass court major twice in the Open Era (2013 and 2016). In addition, he’s the only tennis player in history to defend an Olympic gold medal (2012 and 2016). He said (via BBC Sport), “I don’t think so (on playing the US Open or the Davis Cup).”

He added, “Probably if I was going to finish my career, I would rather finish at Wimbledon or an Olympic Games – to me that would probably be more fitting. I’ve had amazing experiences and memories from Wimbledon, but also being part of British Olympics teams.”

However, the story took an unfortunate turn when he was forced to retire in the second round at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships. Murray was suffering from back issues and as per the advice of his medical team, he retired for the second round match.

The Scotsman also underwent a surgical procedure for a spinal lump last month because he was keen to play at Wimbledon. Last week, it was confirmed by the Grand Slam that Andy Murray will partner with his brother, Jamie Murray to play at the 2024 Wimbledon. However, no update was provided about the 37-year-old’s status in singles.

Nevertheless, he has officially withdrawn from the men’s singles event at the grass court major. His team announced his withdrawal from the oldest tennis tournament. The statement read, “Andy has taken the difficult decision not to play the singles this year.”

It further read, “But, he has confirmed he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon one last time.”

Andy Murray was going to face the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac for the first time at the 2024 Wimbledon. Machac will face Belgium’s David Goffin at Murray’s place.
