Coco Gauff continues on her steady march towards a first-ever quarterfinal appearance.

Coco Gauff will be taking on unseeded qualifier Sonay Kartal in the third round of the 2024 Wimbledon. On Wednesday, Gauff defeated another qualifier, Romanian Anca Todonim, to secure a straightforward 6-2, 6-1 win. The American ended Todoni’s Wimbledon aspirations in an hour and six minutes.

She spent a minute less on the court during her opening-round win against Caroline Dolehide. Later today, Gauff and Jessica Pegula join forces in the women’s doubles opening round against Ukrainian duo Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska.

Coco Gauff is yet to be tested in the event and has breezed past with straight-set wins over Caroline Dolehide and now Anca Todoni. Kartal, ranked World No. 298, recorded upset wins over 31st-ranked Sorana Cirstea in the first round and World No. 45 Clara Burel in the second round.

The WTA World No. 2 remains a firm favorite in the bottom half of the draw as she looks to advance to her first Wimbledon semifinal.

Sonay Kartal will make her trip to the Centre Court at Wimbledon for the first time as she takes on the WTA World No. 2 and defending US Open champion in the third round.  Only seven of the top ten seeds remain in the fray, leaving the door open for more high-profile exits. 

Jasmine Paolini, Madison Keys, Marta Kostyuk and Emma Navarro are some of the big names the winner of the Coco Gauff vs Sonay Kartal face-off could end up playing against in the quarterfinal stage. Prediction

Sonay Kartal has made history by becoming only the second British woman to reach the Wimbledon third round as a qualifier in the Open Era. The other woman of British heritage to achieve the feat was Karen Cross in 1997. Her best appearance at a Grand Slam before 2024 was reaching the first round at SW19 in 2022 and 2023.

Kartal has a chance to complete a third consecutive upset in the current edition of Wimbledon, which will mean another early exit for Gauff. The American is yet to make it past the fourth round in five appearances. 

Gauff, with a No. 2 ranking in the WTA, has reached the quarterfinals or better at the other three Grand Slams. She claimed the US Open trophy in 2023 and reached the semifinals at the 2024 French Open.

Kartal has a win-loss of 20-5 in singles this season, while Gauff is 32-10. Gauff has a career haul of seven singles titles, while Kartal is on the hunt for her first WTA-level title. The 22-year-old British woman has won three ITF singles titles in 2024, two in London and one in Spain.

However, the British qualifier is unlikely to cause much trouble for Gauff and stand in the way of a fourth-round appearance for the American. 

Result: Gauff to win in three sets.
