Francisco Comesana stunned Andrey Rublev in only his second match on grass.

Argentina’s Francisco Comesana recorded a memorable victory over Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the first round of the Wimbledon 2024 Championships on Tuesday. Interestingly, it was Comesana’s first victory on the ATP tour.

The Argentine tennis player knocked out the 2024 Madrid Open champion on his Grand Slam debut, which was only his second-ever match on grass. Mainly playing Challenger tournaments, Francisco Comesana tried playing at the Eastbourne International before Wimbledon.

However, he was eliminated in the qualifiers by Great Britain’s Charles Broom. Comesana has played only four matches on the tour until now, and his only win has come against 10-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev.

Comesana was born on October 6, 2000, in Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, to father Agustín and mother Adela. Interestingly, he started playing tennis at the young age of six. In 2021, he moved to Córdoba, Argentina, where he started playing professional tennis.

In May 2022, the Argentine tennis star won his first ATP Challenger doubles title in Vicenza, alongside Italy’s Luciano Darderi. Next month, he tasted individual success as he won the Corrientes Challenger and the Challenger Tenis Club Argentino.

Earlier this year in February, the 22-year-old made his ATP debut at the 2024 Córdoba Open as a wildcard. However, he suffered a first-round loss to compatriot Thiago Agustín Tirante in the ATP 250 event. He later qualified for the ATP 500 Rio Open, where he again suffered a first-round loss against a countryman, this time, Francisco Cerundolo.

Francisco Comesana then entered another South American event, the Chile Open, as a lucky loser after Mariano Navone’s withdrawal. However, he was eliminated in the first round by Juan Pablo Varillas. Comesana made his ATP top 100 debut by winning the Oeiras Challenger.

Nevertheless, he entered the Wimbledon Championships as World No. 122 and played his first match against Andrey Rublev. Francisco Comesana won the first set 6-4 but Rublev made a quick comeback 5-7 in the second set. Nevertheless, in his second grass court match, the Argentine tennis star pulled a huge upset, with the scoreline reading 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6.

He later took to Instagram to celebrate his victory. The Argentine tennis star wrote, “CREER. Thank you to everyone who helped me become who I am! Let’s go for more! Always!”

Comesana will play his second match against Great Britain’s Adam Walton on Thursday. Walton stunned Argentina’s Federico Coria in straight sets in his opening round match.
